What do I need?

  • A heart-shaped crown ready to use (sold in craft shops) or flexible branches from bushes to make one yourself (for example: wisteria, willow, hazel, woody climbing stem of vine...).
  • A pruning shear to cut branches, flowers and harvest berries
  • A pair of scissors
  • Natural decorations according to taste and season:
  • Twine for assembling, a ribbon or floral wire to wrap. A hot glue gun can also be used

How to make a heart-shaped crown?

1- To start, if you choose to make your crown with branches, it can be useful to make a heart-shaped template on a sheet or piece of cardboard to help with shaping. If you prefer to use a ready-to-use crown, go straight to step 3.

2- Select and cut flexible branches with pruning shear. First take 5 to 6 branches and tie twine around the middle. Repeat this operation a second time. Follow shape of template by twisting branches and tying ends together with a pretty ribbon or twine. You can also secure branches by winding them with a flexible branch or floral wire.

3- Lay crown flat, then add decorations of choice, starting with flowers. You can hold them in place with twine or floral pins.

4- Then add other types of flowers, berries and foliage by tucking stems between branches. Secure everything with twine.

5- You can also add decorative elements such as green moss, glitter or pearls for a more festive effect or for a wedding.

4- Finally, hang crown on a wall or on a door using ribbon or string. You can simply place it as a centrepiece or on a shelf.

5- And there you go, your heart-shaped crown is now ready to be admired! Feel free to personalise it to taste and desire, by adding decorative elements or by choosing branches and flowers in different colours, depending on season.

Tips and advice

  • You can also make this pretty crown using the beautiful red stems of a dogwood (Cornus sanguinea) to keep colours of passion and love.
  • In autumn and winter, you will find many berries in garden or countryside in red tones, such as hips or cotoneaster berries.
  • For fresh flowers, choose traditional roses, the ultimate romantic symbol, lilies for their elegance, tulips for cheerfulness, pinks for a rustic note and peonies for softness.
  • For dried flowers, use gypsophila for lightness, honesty, statice, hydrangeas, and even ornamental grasses.
  • For decorative foliage, consider burning bush (Euonymus alatus) for its orange leaves, barberry (Berberis thunbergii) for its bright red leaves and camellia for its glossy green foliage and elegant flowers.
