Get to know Alstroemeria or Peruvian Lily to add an exotic yet light touch to your garden. If you plant them in well-drained soil or in a quality potting mix to store over winter, you can enjoy them in all regions. Native to South America, they are more or less hardy depending on the cultivars. They bloom generously for long months in summer and autumn, often from June to October.
They come in numerous cultivars, in red, yellow, orange, pink, white, and in multicoloured, washed-out or intense shades. They are always adorned with small brown striations that give them their exotic touch, just like the shape of the flower and the sometimes prominent stamens.

Alstroemeria 'Indian Summer'
Let’s start with a must-have: Alstroemeria ‘Indian Summer’, reminiscent of an Indian summer, dazzles us with its vibrant flowering in yellow, orange, and red. Its unique, dark foliage is green-bronze with purple highlights. The central petals are bright yellow and broadly striped with brown, while the outer petals are orange tinged with rose-red. The large, sturdy stems reach 70 cm in height and form dense clumps 50 cm wide. Flowering occurs from June to October, even into November. The plant is classified in USDA zone 8b, tolerating occasional frosts down to -10 °C.
Complement its rosy hues with a grass like Muhlenbergia capillaris with its pink spikes. Accent with bulbs of Eremurus ‘Pinokkio’.

Alstroemeria ‘Indian Summer’
Alstroemeria ligtu hybrid
The Alstroemeria ligtu hybrid produces open flowers from June, featuring bright yellow maculate petals striated with purple-brown, surrounded by pink petals with a salmon throat and a more intense pink median. The foliage, arranged on the upper half of the stems, is grey-green. The plant reaches a height of 60 cm and spreads 40 cm wide. In good conditions, it blooms throughout the summer until September. Quite hardy, it is classified in USDA zone 7b, tolerating frosts down to -15 °C.
Lightly pair it with a Fuchsia magellanica var. molinae and a Buenos Aires Verbena, Verbena bonariensis.

Alstroemeria 'Inca Serin'
The Alstroemeria ‘Inca Serin’, with warm colours, is a rich salmon pink. Semi-dwarf, it has a compact and rounded habit, with medium green foliage. It reaches 45 cm in all directions at maturity. Rated in USDA zone 8b, it withstands frost down to -7 °C if well mulched. You can enjoy its flowers from June to October. They consist of salmon pink petals broadly maculate with yellow and striped with brown, surrounded by rounder petals of the same rich and refined salmon pink.
In the ground, add a bright Crocosmia ‘Walberton Yellow’ and a soft Foxglove ‘Suttons Apricot’.

Alstroemeria ‘Inca Serin’
Alstroemeria 'Inca Ice'
Very soft, the flower of the Alstroemeria ‘Inca Ice’ consists of three central petals infused with pale yellow and streaked with purple-brown, surrounded by three larger petals washed in soft pink with a slightly green median. The foliage arranged on the upper part of the stems is grey-green. The plant reaches 60 cm in height and 45 cm in width. Moderately hardy, it withstands winter frost down to about -7 °C, classified in zone 8b.
Very pretty in a pot on the balcony or terrace, it also fits well in the border of a flowerbed alongside the grey foliage of an Artemisia. Add mauve flowers of Nepetas and Asters.

Alstroemeria ‘Inca Ice’
Alstroemeria 'Duc d'Anjou Jean'
Medium-sized variety, the Alstroemeria ‘Duc d’Anjou Jean’, from the ‘Ducs d’Anjou’ series, features a chic and sophisticated flower with an exotic design and soft colouring. It offers well-rounded central petals that are bicoloured white and salmon, striped with brown and slightly maculate with yellow. The outer plump petals are also white and salmon, this time speckled with aquamarine at the tip. The whole flower is covered in small salmon stripes. This Inca Lily blooms from June to October and reaches 50 cm in all directions. Its foliage is dark green with a slight blue tint. Rated in USDA zone 8a, it can occasionally tolerate frosts of around -15 °C in winter.
Plant it in a bed with roses and white and coral flowers, or with a solid-coloured salmon daylily like the Daylily ‘Annie Welch’.

Alstroemeria ‘Duc d’Anjou Jean’
Alstroemeria 'Majestics Aubance'
Alstroemeria ‘Majestics Aubance’ is one of the large Alstroemerias from the ‘Majestics’ series, reaching heights of 80 – 90 cm with a nearly identical spread. The foliage of this tricolour Inca Lily, with abundant leaves arranged along the stems, is dark bluish green. It dies back in winter, but the plant is frost-resistant down to about -15 °C, provided the stump is well mulched. It is classified in USDA zone 8a. Its flowers, measuring 5 to 6 cm, bloom from June to October. They consist of three central petals that are golden yellow with pink tips, streaked with brown. Three larger petals surround them, orange to salmon pink with a broad midstripe of a deeper pink.
It looks lovely in the middle of a border, but don’t forget to make bouquets with it; it has a long vase life, which encourages the production of new flowers. Create a cheerful bouquet with Echinaceas in similar tones, along with spikes of Sanguisorbas in brown, yellow Rudbeckias, and panicles of Solidago.

Alstroemeria ‘Majestics Aubance’
Alstroemeria 'Sweet Laura'
Rare, the Alstroemeria ‘Sweet Laura’ exudes a light spicy fragrance, reminiscent of carnation. It boasts a distinctive flowering charm, with a wild appearance. Spicy, the colour of its flower is too, in golden yellow, burnt orange, and mahogany. This Inca lily forms dense, upright clumps with glossy foliage of a vibrant green. From June to September, small 4 cm flowers bloom with bright yellow petals speckled with purple-brown and petals of the same yellow, maculate with an orange tip. The reverse of the petals and the stamens are mahogany. The plant is moderately hardy, down to about -12 °C. It is classified in USDA zone 8a. It reaches 70 cm in height when in flower, with a spread of 50 cm.
Plant it in a border with yellow or orange Crocosmias like Crocosmia ‘Star of the East’. Add clumps of medium-sized grasses like Pennisetums or Calamagrostis and ornamental garlic bulbs.

Alstroemeria ‘Sweet Laura’
Alstroemeria 'Inca Pulse'
Highly floriferous, the Alstroemeria ‘Inca Pulse’ features lovely small flowers measuring 4 cm in vibrant red. They are composed of narrow central petals maculate with bright yellow, adorned with well-defined brown striations. The surrounding petals are broader, in a red tinged with dark orange. The foliage is light green or grey-green. The plant blooms from June to October. In winter, it tolerates frosts down to -7 °C, classified in USDA zone 8b. It is of medium size, reaching 50 cm in all directions.
Plant it in a border or pot alongside bicoloured Helenium ‘Short’n Sassy’.

Alstroemeria ‘Inca Pulse’

Alstroemeria aurea ‘Orange King’ dazzles us with its very bright flowers. The plant reaches 80 cm in height when in flower and spreads to 50 cm. It produces numerous flowers in mid-summer, in July and August. The central lanceolate petals are light orange, broadly maculate with yellow, and striped with purple-brown. They bear long orange stamens. The outer petals are the same bright orange, washed with yellow. The reverse of the petals is a deeper orange, almost red. The foliage on the upper part of the tall stems is a slightly greyish green. Quite hardy, the plant is classified in USDA zone 7b, tolerating temperatures down to about -15 °C.
In a lovely contrast in borders or on a bank, plant alongside it a Ceratostigma willmottianum ‘Forest Blue’ and some intense blue-violet Sages.

Alstroemeria aurea ‘Orange King’

Let’s finish with a cultivar featuring equally bright flowers in intense fuchsia: Alstroemeria ‘Duc Arthur’. Its narrow central petals are maculate with cream yellow and heavily striped with brown, creating a striking contrast. Its dark foliage is an elegant bluish green. Flowers appear from June and continuously renew until October. The plant is of medium size: 50 cm tall in flower and 40 cm wide. Classified in USDA zone 8a like all varieties from the ‘Ducs d’Anjou’ series, it tolerates brief frosts down to -12 °C under a thick mulch in well-drained soil.
Plant it in a border, and to enhance the exoticism of the scene, add orange daylilies such as Daylily middendorffii. Accent with Kniphofia ‘Flamenco’ and Cannas.
