Aubrieta: the 7 most beautiful varieties
a perennial groundcover for rock gardens
Contents
The aubrieta or Aubrieta is a short-lived perennial groundcover from the Brassicaceae family (the family of cabbage, turnip, mustard, wallflower…) that excels in sunny rock gardens. Hardy, trouble-free, and low-maintenance, it is the perfect plant to brighten up spring (from April to June) with its carpet of flowers. The flowers can be, depending on the variety, pink, white, red, purple, or even blue. After flowering, its evergreen silver or variegated foliage will continue to adorn the garden for the rest of the year.
Aubrieta requires a well-drained, poor, cool, rocky soil, even calcareous. It thrives in rockeries, as a border for flower beds, along a path, to flower a paving, on top of a low wall, or even in troughs and planters. Often available in pots, aubrieta seeds can also be found in stores.

Aubrieta 'Kitte White'
Hybrid aubrietas of the ‘Kitte’ series are mostly derived from Aubrieta gracilis, native to the mountainous regions of Greece and Albania. These are compact, spreading young plants, forming cushions about 15 cm high, with a maximum spread of 30 cm.
The Aubrieta ‘Kitte White’ is a well-formed compact aubrieta, creating lovely regular cushions in spring, covered with white flowers, a good size for an aubrieta (1.8 cm in diameter). These flowers attract pollinators. For the rest of the year, the evergreen leaves (semi-evergreen in severe cold) grey-green will continue to adorn the garden.
