Spring Difficulty

Clematis terniflora

Climbing easily up to 4 m and flowering abundantly, Clematis terniflora is a vigorous clematis whose flowering begins in late summer and continues until October-November, halted by the first frosts. Its countless small cream-white flowers create a cloud that perfumes the area of the garden where it is planted and offers its nectar to foraging insects that relish it during this time when food starts to become scarce. Little demanding in terms of soil, it tolerates limestone perfectly, proves to be very drought-resistant once established, and is completely hardy.

Reserve the clematis terniflora for large sunny or semi-shaded spaces. It can be invaluable for covering an unsightly fence or wall, with Bowles Mauve wallflowers at its base, which are equally easy to grow and, flowering from March to June, will bloom again in September until the first cold. Add clumps of white valerian with a wild appearance, which will flower in this space without watering and are easy to live with during the summer.

Clematis cirrhosa 'Advent Bells'

Offering myriad bell-shaped white-cream flowers speckled with purple, the Clematis cirrhosa ‘Advent Bells’ blooms from November. Its glossy green evergreen foliage may sometimes disappear in summer to escape the heat. Not very hardy (around -10°C), this medium-sized variety (4m in height and 1.50 to 2m in spread) is best reserved for mild climates or pot cultivation, where it can be sheltered in winter.

Drought-resistant and low-maintenance, ‘Advent Bells’ is ideal for southern gardens where it can climb into a deciduous bush like a Vitex or a Cotinus: its cascades of flowers will adorn their bare branches in late season, and it will appreciate the dappled shade of their foliage during summer.

Clematis 'Little Mermaid'

The Clematis ‘Little Mermaid’ adorns the garden with its soft colours in spring, and graces us with a second wave of charming flowers in early autumn! While its spring flower is perfectly round and double, the autumn flower with 8 petals is more often single, in a lovely pearly pink. This clematis clings to its support or host plant via petioles transformed into tendrils. It is a woody, climbing perennial with short stems that will reach 2 m in height, spreading to 1 m.

Take advantage of its ease of cultivation to give your garden a touch of romantic and bohemian charm, alongside Miscanthus sinensis ‘Graziella’ and Fleece Flower Persicaria amplexicaulis ‘Fat Domino’.

Clematis heracleifolia

With a simple, rustic appearance, herbaceous clematis easily and quickly enhance and flower the borders with their fragrant bells or stars. Mostly non-climbing, they are primarily perennials with dense annual foliage that forms bushy clumps. Some species, such as Clematis heracleifolia are edge plants that prefer a semi-shaded position. This species blooms in autumn, at a time when others have faded. Semi-evergreen, it produces abundant clusters of sky-blue, tubular, and reflexed bells, fragrant, atop a mass of large, velvety, grey-green leaves.

Too rare in gardens, it will enhance a semi-shaded border when paired with the St. John’s Wort Hypericum (x) moserianum ‘Little Misstery’, which offers bright green foliage variegated with golden yellow, a colour echoed in its abundant flowering from July to September. Thriving in full sun, it also appreciates semi-shade. The Heuchera ‘Happy Flames’ is a beautiful evergreen ground cover perennial to plant alongside fragrant violets ‘Königin Charlotte’ that bloom from March to July, provided the soil remains moist.

Clematis rehderiana

As vigorous as it is, Clematis rehderiana is a herbaceous climbing clematis with soft green deciduous foliage. This botanical species offers a late flowering from the end of July, renewing until October. Uncommon, it is adorned with a multitude of small pendulous bells, with curled petals in pastel yellow, more or less fragrant.

Cold-resistant, the clematis rehderiana enjoys a sunny or semi-shaded position, sheltered from the wind. It adapts to any well-drained soil, preferably rich and humus-bearing, and can be accompanied in the garden by Aster novi-belgii ‘Audrey’ and Mahonia hybrid ‘Soft Caress’.

Clematis florida 'Utopia'

The Clematis florida ‘Utopia’ is a little-known Japanese hybrid of Clematis florida, more floriferous, more robust, and less demanding than its parent. It stands out with its large single flowers in an elegant satin white with a pronounced lilac-pink edge. They are beautifully punctuated by a heart of dark purple stamen leaning towards violet. This is a deciduous climbing clematis that blooms in two waves: first in June-July, then again in September-October. ‘Utopia’ has a compact habit and a medium size, making it suitable for pairing with bushes in a border, climbing on a support, or even planting in a pot or container on a balcony or terrace.

It is in partial shade that its colours are best highlighted: plant some perennial groundcovers at its base, such as Hardy geranium ‘Bob’s Blunder’ and Saxifrage cortusifolia ‘Cheap Confections’ and enjoy the spectacle with minimal maintenance!

Clematis 'Kingfisher'

Selected for its suitability for pot cultivation, Clematis ‘Kingfisher’ is a compact climbing plant (2 m in height, with a roughly equivalent spread) that produces very beautiful and large bright blue-violet flowers, highlighted by a centre of yellow stamens. It blooms in spring, then again in late summer until October. It can make a statement on a balcony or terrace, but also in the ground in a small garden.

For a blue and yellow harmony, plant it alongside a climbing rose such as ‘Golden Age’, with at their feet a Ceratostigma willmottianum ‘Sapphire Ring’.

Clematis 'Succes Magenta'

Obtained in France, the stunning Clematis ‘Succes Magenta’ blooms from April to October along its entire height, producing large flowers in a magnificent bright rose-red that contrasts beautifully with a heart of yellow stamens: both very elegant and very colourful!

With a compact growth habit allowing it to be cultivated in a pot (2 m tall, with a spread of at least 1 m), it can adorn a trellis or fence in full sun or partial shade, accompanied by variegated star jasmine Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘Sun Lover’, with groundcover roses ‘Robe Fleurie’ at their feet, exceptionally floriferous and well repeat flowering from June to October.
