The viridiflora tulips are very beautiful single late-flowering tulips, typically blooming in late April or throughout May. They distinguish themselves from other tulips by the underside of their petals, veined with green. They always display a dual coloration, in a wide range of shades: broken tones, yellow, pink, salmon, red… The green flame that enhances and contrasts the petals can vary in intensity depending on the cultivars, with flowers that can be taller or shorter, but always supported by a sturdy stem. These are very elegant tulips, whether the flower shape is elongated or more rounded.

Like many spring bulbs, viridiflora tulips make a significant impact when planted en masse in garden beds. They require sunlight and good drainage. We present the most sought-after and popular varieties of these characteristic green-flame tulips.

Tulip viridiflora 'China Town'

It is one of the most appreciated viridiflora tulips for its soft, pastel colours. The viridiflora tulip ‘China Town’ is the worthy heir of the famous ‘Groenland’ tulip. Very graceful, it has a cup-shaped form, with its petals ending in a point. It displays a candy pink to salmon pink hue, beautifully veined with green at the centre of the petals. The foliage is also interesting, marginate with cream. ‘China Town’ blooms every year in May.

Small in stature, about 30 cm in height, it fits perfectly in pots on the balcony or terrace as well as in the garden. Like all tulips, plant it in a sunny spot and in well-drained soil.

Tulip viridiflora 'Spring Green'

Again, there’s plenty of freshness with the Viridiflora tulip ‘Spring Green’, a variety celebrated since the 1970s, yet so contemporary in its simplicity and elegance. It is one of the most beautiful in white tones, and the green flame appearing on the petals adds an extra brilliance and delicacy. Standing at 45 to 50 cm tall, it forms a lovely cup of cream colour, tinged with a very soft green. It proves to be quite resistant to wind and rain, and blooms for an extended period of 3 weeks.

This tulip is perfect for a white garden, as it provides an essential link between the white and green flowerings of spring. It pairs well, for example, with hostas or white bleeding hearts. The ‘Spring Green’ tulip will also create a charming spring bouquet alongside the ‘China Town’ tulip.

Tulip viridiflora 'Artist'

On increases in colour intensity with the viridiflora tulip ‘Artist’. A cultivar developed in the late 1940s, it is one of the most popular viridiflora tulips. And for good reason, its salmon-orange colour flamed with green is stunning and irresistibly draws the eye. Beautiful even before it opens, revealing its green striations, it remains very lovely once fully bloomed, displaying a corolla of elongated petals, sometimes almost fringed at their tips.

Reaching a height of 30 to 35 cm, the lovely flowers are large, about 7 cm in diameter. The ‘Artist’ tulip pairs well with other yellow or orange bulbous plants, as well as many spring perennials. It also holds up beautifully in a vase like its counterparts, adding a romantic charm to borders and pots. It will also be in bloom in May in most regions.

Tulip viridiflora 'Golden Artist'

The yellow version of the viridiflora tulip ‘Artist’ is called ‘Golden Artist’, and it certainly has its advantages: it retains the characteristics of the ‘Artist’ tulip, but it boasts a stunning orange-yellow hue, tinged with apricot. The mix of brightly coloured amber petals and the green striation creates a striking contrast. Flowering in mid-May, it deserves a prominent spot in the garden or can be combined with other earlier yellow tulips for a display on a windowsill, for example.

The viridiflora tulip ‘Golden Artist’ will appeal to all gardeners seeking sunny, warm colours. It pairs well with yellow and orange blooms, as well as with purple and cream tones.

Tulip viridiflora 'Flaming Spring Green'

A hint of the viridiflora tulip ‘Spring Green’, enhanced with red: here is the tulip ‘Flaming Spring Green’! In other words, a tulip as elegant as its predecessor with its subtle apple green veining on a cream background, but much more colourful with its raspberry red striations! This variety thus produces a tricolour tulip, particularly cheerful and variegated.

Like other tulips in the viridiflora family, ‘Flaming Spring’ blooms for a long time in May, or late April during mild springs. With its 45 cm height, it can be planted at the edge or in the middle of a flower bed. The flowers open at ripeness in a wide, colourful cup. Due to its originality, this tulip is stunning when planted in masses. It can also be paired with other late tulips, such as solid-coloured lily-flowering tulips in a purple hue like ‘Burgundy’ or cream and green like the tulip ‘Greenstar’.

Tulip viridiflora 'Esperanto'

Finally, here is a well-known and sought-after viridiflora tulip among red tulip enthusiasts. This old variety of tulip has been used for decades to bring life to the garden in the heart of spring. The viridiflora tulip ‘Esperanto’ blooms in late April or early May, gradually unfolding its raspberry-red petals striated with green. Occasionally, touches of white border the green flame, enhancing the elegance of the flowering. It is a tulip that measures about 30 cm high, easy to integrate into the garden, and also very beautiful for creating cut flower arrangements with fresh and delicate hues for the home.

Like the viridiflora tulip ‘China Town’, its foliage is also marginate – but more broadly – with white, adding to its uniqueness. Plant its bulbs in autumn, in containers, in pots, or within a flower bed.
