Clematis recta 'Purpurea'

Prowling to a height at ripeness of 1.50 m with a span of 70 cm, Clematis recta ‘Purpurea’ is a beautiful perennial with fine purple foliage, highlighting its multitude of small star-shaped fragrant white flowers, typical of clematis. Its flowering occurs in June and July, a time when every gardener wishes to see their borders in bloom. Combined with other naturally styled perennials, it will bring brightness and lightness to the borders where it can either creep along the ground with its flexible stems or climb on a bush or support.

Ornamental even outside the flowering period due to its beautiful purple-tinted foliage, this herbaceous clematis thrives in cool, light soil. It is hardy down to -29°C.

Clematis integrifolia

The Clematis integrifolia is suitable for all gardeners: very easy to grow, drought-resistant and undemanding, it forms a generous clump of 1 m in height, with an equivalent spread. Each spring, numerous stems emerge from its base, bearing small, ovate leaves of deep green. The bell-shaped flowers of Clematis integrifolia, bloom from June to September in intense blue bell-shaped flowers that are delicately scented. This lovely flowering is followed by the formation of feathery silver fruits, which are very decorative at the end of the season. One more reason, if one were needed, to adopt it in the garden: beautiful for many months, this clematis will easily enliven any border in full sun or partial shade that is a bit bare or dreary.

Very hardy and somewhat slow to establish, it will first root deeply in rich, cool soil before showing faster growth in subsequent years.

Clematis Saphyra 'Estrella'

With its bushy tuft, the Clematis Saphyra ‘Estrella’ will not exceed 1 m in height, making it easy to insert into a border alongside perennials in complementary or harmonious colours: for example, golden yellow or soft pink. These colours will beautifully complement its star-shaped purple flowers, measuring 5 to 8 cm across, marked with a yellow centre, which bloom from spring to summer. It can be used equally well in small gardens or larger spaces, perhaps planted in groups of three for a repetitive effect in expansive borders.

Very hardy, ‘Estrella’ prefers full sun in fertile, humus-bearing, well-drained soil. Be sure to shade the roots and the base of the stem. This variety flowers on the shoots of the year, so prune it quite severely at the end of winter.

Clematis mandshurica

The Clematis mandshurica is one of those perennials that catches the eye. This herbaceous clematis produces long stems each year, reaching lengths of 3 to 4 m. They climb but also cover the ground and produce a flurry of small white stars throughout the summer, from July to October. In a border, Clematis mandshurica will ideally serve as a vigorous and floriferous groundcover. You can also imagine planting it in the background on a support such as an elegant trellis, or allowing it to colonise a large bush.

As with other herbaceous species, it is best to plant it in full sun, in fertile, humus-bearing, and well-drained soil, taking care to shade the roots and the base of its stems.

Clematis jouiniana 'Robert Brydon'

Magnificent perennial groundcover clematis, Clematis jouiniana ‘Robert Brydon’ forms a beautiful carpet of small pale mauve flowers with curled petals. In a border, it will bloom abundantly in late spring, then more sporadically throughout the summer until the end of August. The flowering will be followed by the formation of feathery grey-white fruits, making it very decorative until the end of the season. Its deciduous leaves are a lovely dark green and are borne on sturdy stems. If you wish to add some height to your border, you can guide it to climb on a support or through a bush.

Very hardy, this clematis prefers a deep, fertile clay-sandy soil that remains moist. It enjoys a sunny position with its base in the shade: when grown as a groundcover, this variety covers its base by itself, helping to maintain good moisture.

Clematis heracleifolia 'Pink Dwarf'

To plant at the edge, at the front of borders, and as groundcover, herbaceous clematis with a compact growth habit allow for quick and long-lasting flowering in the foreground. The Clematis heracleifolia ‘Pink Dwarf’ does not exceed 40 cm in height. It forms a clump of semi-spreading stems with a width of 40 cm as well, adorned with beautiful dark green leaves featuring three large leaflets. Offering clusters of tubular, reflexed bell-shaped flowers, this charming little clematis displays lovely pale pink flowering that will complement many plants within borders: perennials, roses, or flowering bushes. Generous, it blooms from August to October, brightening the end of the season by taking over from earlier blooms.

Very hardy, Clematis heracleifolia are edge plants that prefer a partially shaded but still bright exposure. They appreciate well-drained, deep soils rich in humus that remain cool.
