What a wonderful little clematis! It has adapted well at the base of a rose bush, offering a multitude of small flowers. It's truly delightful. I will add that it's quite robust and resistant. Very, very happy!

Description

The Clematis jouiniana 'Robert Brydon' is a vigorous perennial, non-climbing clematis that produces small pale mauve and white flowers. It is a variety of clematis that is ideal as a ground cover.

From July to September, this semi-herbaceous plant, reaching a height of 1.5m (5ft), forms a carpet of curved petal flowers, tubular, pale mauve with white stamens, measuring 4 cm (2in) in diameter. Its deciduous leaves, shiny, with 3 leaflets, dark green and 3 to 8cm (1 to 3in) long, are carried by sturdy stems. At the end of flowering, fruits appear, topped with silvery grey feathers, very decorative.

Originally from the northern hemisphere, the Clematis jouiniana 'Robert Brydon' likes a clay-siliceous, well-worked, deep, moist and fertile soil, in a sunny position with the base in shade. The advantage of this variety is that it covers its base on its own, allowing it to retain moisture. Watch out for aphids!

The Clematis jouiniana 'Robert Brydon' can be paired with other clematis species or climbing roses to shade their base. It will make a sensation in perennial borders!

Tips: Avoid excessive fertilisers that stimulate foliage at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to avoid excessive moisture that promotes wilt disease.

Planting and care

The Clematis jouiniana 'Robert Brydon' should be planted in spring or autumn, at a depth of 8cm (3in), with the root ball laid flat on the soil rather than vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the foot in the shade. Cover the foot with a small mound of soil to encourage new shoots. After planting, cut back the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. The subsequent pruning, in March, will involve cutting back all the stems from the previous year to 10cm (4in) from the ground.
