Clematis arrived in good condition. Planted under the best conditions in April 2022, as advised on your information sheet. During the beautiful and warm spring and summer of last year, it barely grew (only two weak shoots and no flowers). Despite our care, we were not optimistic about it. But to our surprise, in the early spring one year later, it seems to be showing signs of starting to grow. It just goes to show that patience is key in the garden... Stay tuned...

More information

This Clematis, more of a ground cover than a climber, produces a swarm of small white stars throughout the summer. Delicate and refined, they also possess a rare quality in this genus, they are fragrant. They generously cover the long stems that colonise the surroundings (carpeting the soil or bushes) and stand out clearly from its dark green foliage. It's a touch of freshness in sunny or partially shaded exposures. This hardy perennial appreciates moist, neutral or slightly acidic soils.

Description

Clematis mandshurika has some interesting and uncommon characteristics for the genus: it behaves more like a ground cover than a climber, and has a generous white and fragrant flowering. Its multiple small star-shaped flowers carpet the long stems that colonise the surroundings, standing out against dark green foliage and providing freshness and delicacy throughout the summer.

Belonging to the Ranunculaceae family and originating from China, this Clematis likes fertile soil that is neutral to slightly acidic. It prefers a sunny or partially shaded position, with the base of the plant always in shade. It is cold-resistant and can withstand even severe frost. However, it does not tolerate stagnant moisture, so the substrate must be well-draining and watering should be moderate (especially during its establishment).

It is a herbaceous perennial that produces long stems each year, which can reach 3 to 4 metres (10 to 13 feet) in length. They can climb but can also easily cover the ground. They can be trained to create a beautiful dark green leafy mantle. The leaves are deciduous and compound, with smooth margins and a lanceolate shape, forming a beautiful backdrop for the abundant flowering from June to August, often continuing into September. This is followed by multiple small white flowers, barely 2 to 3 cm (1in) in diameter, grouped in panicles, revealing slightly greenish prominent stamens. The overall appearance is very delicate and emits a fragrance that some compare to hawthorn and others to aniseed.

The flowering of this Clematis is exceptionally abundant and fresh in summer. It can colonise plants nearby and bring light to a privet hedge, a few topiaries of Lonicera nitida or Boxwood. In a container, it can green up the surroundings of a terrace or balcony. Perfect in a white-themed bed, it also blends well with pastel colours for a very romantic effect.

Planting and care

Clematis Mandshurica should be planted in spring or autumn, at a depth of 5 cm (2in), with the root ball placed diagonally on the ground. The head should be in the sun (or partial shade) and the base in the shade. You can place a flat tile in front of the crown or plant ground cover plants or a perennial Geranium. It prefers deep, well-worked and rich soils, preferably neutral or slightly acidic. Water regularly but not excessively during the first few weeks after planting. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to encourage the emergence of new shoots. After planting, cut back the shoots to 30 cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely or guide them onto nearby vegetation if desired, otherwise, let them run along the ground. Pruning should be done in spring before the growth resumes. Keep an eye out for pests such as aphids and slugs and snails.
