Perennial plants that are not well-known, Uvularias are herbaceous plants native to North America with tender green foliage reminiscent of Solomon’s Seal, and they produce beautiful yellow flowers in drooping, bell-shaped clusters, leaning towards the ground in April and May. Their bright yet delicate flowering is much appreciated. These are woodland plants that thrive in shade, in cool, humus-bearing, slightly acidic soil. Discover in this guide all our tips for pairing Uvularias according to your desires and your garden style!

Difficulty

In a woodland garden with a very natural style

Uvularia is a shade plant native to the undergrowth of North America: thus it will thrive in a shaded corner of the garden, in fertile, cool soil, to recreate a natural woodland atmosphere. Pair it with the beautiful white flowering of Trillium grandiflorum, Anemone nemorosa ‘Lychette’, and Tiarella ‘Running Tiger’. These perennials will bring a lovely touch of brightness! Add a splash of colour with the beautiful blue bell-shaped flowers of Bluebell, Hyacinthoides non-scripta. Also consider the decorative, finely cut fronds of ferns, as well as the foliage of hostas, Solomon’s Seal, and sweet woodruff. You will create a fresh and natural atmosphere, perfect for recharging without leaving the garden!

With spring bulbs

The Uvularia produces beautiful yellow bells in April-May: take the opportunity to pair it with the flowering of spring bulbs. Consider, for example, the ornamental garlic Allium triquetrum, the small white spikes of Muscari ‘White Magic’, and the stunning white flowers with a yellow heart of Narcissus poeticus ‘Recurvus’. Also discover the beautiful flowering of Ornithogalum nutans, which forms upright stems each bearing 10 to 15 star-shaped flowers made up of six pearly white petals, almost silver. Alongside these bulbs with white hues and a clean style, feel free to add a splash of colour with the elegant flowering of Camassia leichtlinii ‘Caerulea’ and tulips. For example, discover the botanical tulip Tulipa linifolia, with bright red flowers! These bulbous plants will be perfect for accompanying spring-flowering shrubs, such as azaleas, flowering cherry trees (for example, the stunning variety ‘Kiku Shidare Zakura’), the Judas tree (Cercis siliquastrum), or Exochorda macrantha ‘The Bride’.

To create a very colourful border

Create a border of perennials with very colourful spring flowerings using Uvularia! For example, you can plant it alongside bergenias, doronics, primroses Primula elatior, and Omphalodes. Opt for bright and vibrant shades: red, orange, yellow, blue, pink… Discover the very original flowering of primrose elatior ‘Gold Lace Red’, which produces flowers with a golden yellow centre surrounded by dark red petals, edged in yellow… A flowering full of contrasts that won’t go unnoticed! Also consider the elegant flowering of centaury ‘Amethyst Dream’, with its finely laciniate violet-mauve petals. You can also add a touch of romance with Dicentra spectabilis, or Bleeding Heart, featuring very delicate flowers shaped like small pink or white hearts depending on the variety. The flowers of Uvularia will beautifully complement those of Doronic to create a border with warm and dynamic tones.

With heather soil bushes

Uvularia thrives in shade in cool, rather acidic soil: this makes it an ideal perennial to accompany heather soil bushes, which enjoy similar growing conditions. Pair it, for example, with the beautiful flowering of azaleas and rhododendrons, whose flowers come in a wide range of colours: pink, red, white, mauve, and even yellow or orange (Rhododendron luteum, ‘Glowing Embers’…). They are perfect for enlivening a border! Also consider the delicate bell-shaped flowers of Japanese Andromeda (Pieris japonica). You can also plant it alongside wild camellia ‘Cinnamon Scentsation’, valued for its highly fragrant flowers, and Skimmia japonica. Discover Andromeda polifolia, a little-known dwarf bush that produces small flowers in spring resembling white or pink bells (depending on the variety).

With decorative foliage

In addition to its bell-shaped flowering, Uvularia boasts a beautiful soft green foliage that closely resembles that of Solomon’s Seal. The leaves are ovate lanceolate and are arranged regularly along the stems, in an alternate fashion. Therefore, to highlight its foliage, do not hesitate to pair Uvularia with other perennials that have decorative and colourful foliage: consider, for example, heucheras, which come in an incredible range of colours, as well as hostas and brunnera ‘Jack Frost’, whose silver lamina is adorned with numerous green veins. Also discover begonia ‘Angel Plum’, with its red, purple, and silver palmate leaves, which has the advantage of being hardy down to -10 / -12 °C! Also consider ferns: we particularly recommend Onoclea sensibilis, a little-known carpet-forming species that bears bright soft green fronds, golden in spring. You can also plant alongside them a variegated Solomon’s Seal, Polygonatum falcatum ‘Variegatum’.

To create colour contrasts

The best technique to highlight the bright yellow flowering of Uvularia is to surround it with a backdrop of dark, purplish foliage. This will create a stunning chiaroscuro contrast. Consider, for example, Ophiopogon planiscapus ‘Nigrescens’, Heuchera ‘Obsidian’, Anthriscus sylvestris ‘Ravenswing’, and Astilbe ‘Chocolate Shogun’. Amidst dark foliage, the flowering of Uvularia will be even more striking! Create a colour echo by incorporating a few plants with yellow, light green, or lime tones that will complement the hue of the Uvularia: Hakonechloa macra ‘Aureola’, Lysimachia nummularia ‘Goldilocks’, Dicentra ‘Goldheart’, Onoclea sensibilis, Heuchera ‘Lime Rickey’… This will give you a modern and very original planting scheme that surprises with the intensity of these opposing shades!
