A later start than the two 'Red Sentinel' companions that accompanied it, but definitely here with a full and superb foliage! A shame it was the only one not to flower, we'll see next year. The astilbes were the stars in my pond border, accompanied by heucheras and grasses, it's an explosion of colours and varied foliage truly superb, thank you to your team for your quality young plants.

Description
The 'Chocolate Shogun' Astilbe is a new variety full of contrast: it offers a magnificent almost black chocolate foliage in the middle of which delicate white inflorescences bloom in summer.
Originally from Japan, this hardy perennial forms a voluminous 50cm (20in) tall clump. It develops light foliage, divided into numerous cut leaflets, almost black chocolate. The tiny white flowers are grouped in feathery 20 to 30cm (8 to 12in) long panicles that turn brown in winter. The flowering lasts from June to August.
Easy to grow, 'Chocolate Shogun' Astilbe thrives in rich, deep, consistently moist and fertile soil, preferably acidic, in a partly shady location. It can be forced by repotting the young plant in a mixture of garden soil and heather soil as soon as the first frost occurs. After a month, gradually raise the temperature while frequently watering.
'Chocolate Shogun' Astilbe is ideal for pond borders or in flower beds with hostas, ferns, and acidophilous bushes.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
