Here is a particularly abundant genus, rich in symbolism! Indeed, Lilies are among the most majestic summer-flowering bulbs, which has made them a powerful symbol of purity and royalty throughout the centuries. Equally at home in pots or in the garden and wonderfully fragrant, they allow for the creation of vibrant plant scenes that do not go unnoticed.

If you are wondering which plants to pair with Lilies in the garden, on the balcony, or terrace, follow these few inspirational ideas.

In a soft and vibrant flowerbed

Classic association in the garden, the Lily and the Rose ensure a graceful and elegant flowering. For an atmosphere imbued with both softness and freshness, choose the very lovely Double Asian Lily ‘Elodie’. Offered exclusively at Promesse de Fleurs, it produces charming fully double flowers in delicate soft pink sprinkled with small dark spots towards the centre from June to late August. Set on sturdy, upright stems over 80 cm tall, they have an undeniable presence in the garden and are perfect for bouquets.

Planted in rich, well-drained, light humus soil, accompany it with the Repeat Flowering David Austin Rose ‘Gertrude Jekyll’, an upright bush with very fresh double pink flowers, and the Artemisia ‘Powis Castle’ with its finely cut, downy grey foliage. To enhance the display, plant Larkspur Delphinium Pacific ‘King Arthur’ which boasts impressive flower spikes covered in semi-double bright violet-blue flowers illuminated by a white eye. Finally, add a touch of lightness and simplicity with the Ornamental Garlic Allium ‘Millenium’ and its numerous purple-pink pompom inflorescences in July-August.

In a sunny border for beautiful promises of cut flower arrangements

Flowers in abundance in this full sun composition! The Trumpet Lily Lilium x regale ‘African Queen’, a robust and easy-to-grow variety, offers magnificent trumpet-shaped flowers in summer in a gradient of orange ranging from dark yellow to apricot. Reaching 1.2 m in height when in flower, these beautiful bulbous plants emit a wonderful heady fragrance. To accompany them, choose the Asian Lily ‘Pixie’, more compact (height: 40 cm) but vibrant in colour with their blazing orange flowers. Lightness and greenery will be provided by the opulent clumps of the Cilium Pennisetum alopecuroïdes f. viridescens with their feathery brown spikes at the end of summer.

In well-drained, lightly calcareous soil, complete this composition with the splendid and brand new Camellia-flowered Dahlias ‘Milena Fleur’. While these plants are not very tall, they are generous, and their flowering in subtle shades of pink and orange is truly charming. Finally, the Gladiolus ‘Conca d’Oro’ will punctuate the arrangement with its large yellow spikes edged in coppery orange. Ideal for cut flowers, these various plants will allow you to create stunning bouquets all summer long!

On the edge of a green room

In a green setting, plant in the foreground and in alignment the Lily ‘Foxtrot’. At a height of 40 cm, they are perfect for creating a sumptuously flowered border from June, enhanced by the Heucheras ‘Plum Royale’. While these Lilies produce beautiful clusters of light pink flowers with a deep pink centre, the Heucheras provide a backdrop of their purple foliage against which small white bell-shaped flowers bloom at the same time.

In the background of the bed, to create a green screen, plant evergreen bushes such as the Skimmia ‘Kew Green’ and Hornbeams, either as a trimmed hedge or as isolated specimens depending on your garden’s layout. A Collection of Dwarf Gladioli will beautifully complete this elegant composition, requiring little intervention from the gardener.

Romance of Pastel Tones

With their delicate appearance, Lilies naturally lend themselves to the composition of romantic scenes. Choose a species in pastel tones, such as the Royal Lily Lilium regale. This botanical variety produces numerous large, white flowers with a purple-tinged reverse, which are extremely fragrant. Hardy, it adapts well to any climate and soil, provided it finds a place in well-drained soil. On a support such as an arch or pergola, plant the Clematis ‘Blekitny Aniol’ (or ‘Blue Angel’) intertwined with the Climbing Rose ‘Penny Lane’. While the former will delight you all summer with its large lavender-blue star-shaped flowers, the latter will charm you with its full, fragrant pale pink to pearl-white roses.

To awaken this scene, add generous masses of Echinacea purpurea ‘Double Decker’, with large, frilly daisies in deep pink from July to September.

In a tropical atmosphere

For a tropical atmosphere, choose the Martagon hybrid Lily ‘P320 JW10’. This brand new variety features beautiful purple-red flowers with curved petals, forming a spectacular floral spike from each bulb, bearing numerous slightly fragrant drooping flowers. A bit slow to establish, this Lily will reliably bloom again each year once settled in rich, well-drained soil. To showcase it, create a display with the Dwarf Palm Chamaerops humilis ‘Compacta’, a variety that tolerates partial shade just like the Lily, a splendid giant fern of the variety Osmunda regalis ‘Purpurascens’, and the Fatsia polycarpa ‘Green Fingers’ also known as Taiwan Fatsia. To complement the calyxes of the Martagon Lily, plant beautiful clumps of Arum or Calla Zantedeschia ‘Auckland’, a delightful variety with flowers showcasing a stunning gradient from salmon pink to very soft peach.

In a monochrome pot.

On a terrace or balcony, don’t hesitate to add refinement with Lilies that are well-suited for pot or container cultivation. Plant each in beautiful matching containers or in a large pot, plant the Asian Lily ‘Navona’. Initially selected for cut flowers, this Asian lily produces very beautiful pure white flowers in summer. Of modest size, this variety is particularly well-suited for pot cultivation. Pair it with a Diascia Breeze ‘Plus White’, a new selection that is vigorous and very floriferous, bearing numerous small white flowers from April to October.

At their base, plant clumps of Carex morrowii ‘Variegata’ or Japanese Sedge. Their narrow, glossy leaves, which are green with cream margins, will beautifully highlight the flowers.
