Description

Lilium 'Foxtrot'  is one of the first Asiatic lily hybrids to bloom in the garden. It has clusters of the brightest light pink flowers, cheerfully turned towards the sky. The heart of the flower is a deep pink, and its golden yellow anthers bring a precious touch to this refreshing ensemble. This variety is particularly compact, with dense green and shiny foliage that works well in pots and bouquets.

The 'Foxtrot' Lily is a beautiful American novelty ideal for cut flowers, but still little known. It is a deciduous bulbous plant, with a narrow and vertical tuft from spring onwards and belongs to the lily family. This very dense plant reaches 45 to 55 cm high when in bloom, becoming stronger over the years, and the clump will spread indefinitely with time, as the bulbs produce bulblets through vegetative multiplication. It flowers early, from June onwards. At the top of the stout stems, thick 6-petaled flowers appear in upright umbels. These flowers are not huge, but have an exceptionally bright pink colour. They are fleshy and waxy, overall light pink washed with a deeper pink at the centre of the petals, which is accentuated by a red median line and a white throat with stamens with golden pollen. At full bloom, small pale yellow-green areas speckled with purple can be seen near the throat. The stems are densely covered with alternate, dark green, shiny, narrow leaves.

This lily prefers rich humus, neutral to slightly acidic, well-drained and light soil. You can plant it with perennial plants or modest and not too dense bushes like dwarf maples or deciduous azaleas, as it likes having its base in the shade. These will help prevent the stems from bending under the wind. 'Foxtrot' pairs well with paniculate gypsophila, daylilies, chamomiles, and Coreopsis, as well as roses. Lilies are ideal for borders and in pots with their dense and compact habit, and of course in bouquets.

Planting and care

'Foxtrot' likes humus-rich, fertile, well-drained and light soil. Plant it in full sun, preferably in spring, burying the bulbs 15 cm (6in) deep in soil mixed with leaf compost. A layer of sand will help to avoid rot and attacks from slugs. Mark the planting location, as vegetation only starts in April.

When the stems reach 30 cm (12in) in height, discreetly stake them. If red lily beetles appear, treat them without delay, as their larvae can devour all the leaves. The most effective method is to catch them manually, but be careful as they drop as soon as they are touched.
After flowering, it is a good idea to cut the faded flowers halfway to keep the bed beautiful during the summer.

Tip for planting lilies in compact soil: The scaly bulbs of large lilies hate clay soils that suffocate them and cause rot. In Eastern Europe, they are planted on "benches" built above ground level. These benches are made up of a first layer of gravel, on which compacted branches are placed, all covered with a thick layer of compost 20 to 30 cm (8 to 12in) deep. Plant the bulbs in the compost, on which you can also let some ground-covering plants crawl.

On the terrace, you can create sumptuous pots with lilies. Choose a container that is large and deep enough (at least 16 cm (6in) for one bulb). Fill it with a mixture of garden soil, leaf compost, and sand. Plant the lilies in groups of 3 to 5 bulbs depending on the size of the pot, at a spacing of 10-15 cm (4-6in), then water abundantly. Place the pots in a cool room or outside once the frost has passed. Apply liquid fertiliser twice a month until the flower buds appear.
