Every gardener has in mind the spectacular and refined flowering with the heady scents of Lilies. While they have their place in the carefully designed flowerbeds of sophisticated and romantic gardens, not all of them lend themselves to the composition of more natural-looking gardens. For this purpose, amateur gardeners can focus their choice on martagon lilies and their hybrids. Found wild in France, each of their stems bears a large number of flowers nodding towards the ground, with petals that are curved backwards.

Simple and graceful, discover in this selection 6 lilies perfectly suited for naturalistic gardens.

Lilium 'Peppard Gold'

This hybrid martagon lily, named ‘Peppard Gold’, showcases various bright tones: gold, chick, apricot, and salmon, with brown spots and orange-brown stamens. Beautiful warm hues that can brighten up any perennial and grass bed! With vigorous growth, ‘Peppard Gold’ naturalises quite easily and develops a standing tuft of lanceolate leaves in spring, which will bear floral spikes reaching 80 cm to 1 m in June-July. Each spike consists of more than twenty flowers that attract pollinating insects.

Care for the planting of this bulb: place it in well-drained, rich, and cool soil, even slightly calcareous. Find it a spot in partial shade or full sun, avoiding scorching exposures.

Lilium martagon var. albiflorum

Among Martagon Lilies, the Lilium martagon var.albiflorum is a rare little gem, protected in its natural habitat. Its lovely flowers, delicate in appearance, bloom profusely along stems reaching up to 1.5 m in height when in flower, with clumps spreading to 45 cm. White speckled with magenta pink and slightly tinged with brown, the flowers of the Martagon Lily albiflorum feature recurved petals, characteristic of these species, and long ochre stamens.

As with its relatives, be sure to mark the location of this Lily when planting: as its growth resumes around April, it would be a shame to lose it!

Lilium martagon 'Arabian Night'

Wonderfully fragrant, the Martagon Lily ‘Arabian Night’ will stand out in your natural and rustic displays. Each bulb will produce a spectacular flower spike in June-July, bearing up to 50 small, colourful flowers in gold and mahogany, nodding, with curled petals and prominent stamens. Its elongated, lush green leaves beautifully highlight the colours of its flowers. It will reach a height of between 80 cm and 1 m when in bloom and will spread by naturalising in your borders.

The fragrance of this Lily delights gardeners, but also attracts many pollinating insects. Plant it in a pot to enjoy its scents and colours, or place it in the garden, in well-drained soil, perhaps stony, and slightly cool and humus-bearing.

Lilium 'Claude Shride'

The Martagon Lily ‘Claude Shride’ is a rarity, with an exceptionally generous flowering! Its slender flower stems reach about 1 m in height and each bears around twenty red flowers speckled with deep orange, featuring saffron-orange stamens. As with other Martagon Lilies, the petals are recurved and the flowers droop towards the ground. ‘Claude Shride’ is a naturally elegant hardy Lily, notable for its rich, deep colour and the duration of its flowering, which extends from June to August.

Of reasonable size, this Lily grows well in pots or containers, allowing for a closer admiration of its remarkable flowers.

Lilium martagon 'Manitoba Morning'

Obtained exclusively at Promesse de Fleurs, the Martagon Lily ‘Manitoba Morning’ is a hybrid derived from Lilium martagon and Lilium hansonii. Ideal for borders, in fresh rockeries, and of course in cut flower arrangements, it will spread like other Lilies where you allow it the space to express itself, through vegetative multiplication. This bulbous plant with a compact habit will reach 80 cm in height when in flower, producing floral stems each bearing more than 20 flowers. Pale violet-pink flowers, widely spotted with brown and edged with cream, curve downwards, curling their waxy petals back.

Delightfully fragrant, this lily will bring joy to discerning gardeners and collectors, proudly featuring in a charming and colourful naturalistic display.

Lilium martagon 'Slate's Morning'

This Martagon lily ‘Slate’s Morning’ is a stunning and easy-going hybrid. A bright and beautifully coloured variety, it forms numerous recurved stars in yellow speckled hues, finishing in a lovely orange. The flowers also feature prominent bright orange stamens, which are very decorative.

Easy to grow, ‘Slate’s Morning’ will produce new bulblets over the years, enhancing its compact habit, which reaches 1.2 m in height when in flower. Perfectly hardy, it enjoys gentle sun or a partially shaded position: plant it, for example, in a well-drained, lightly shaded border or at the edge of a woodland, for delightful scenes with warm colours, or in combination with cooler shades.
