With their evergreen and colourful foliage, heucheras are very decorative perennial plants for use in a border, rockery, or pot. Preferring partial shade and humus-bearing, well-drained soil, they create lovely groundcover and can be combined with other plants to create colour harmonies or a very dynamic effect. Heuchera 'Berry Smoothie', a rare colour

The heuchera ‘Berry Smoothie’ features evergreen foliage with a rare colour that transitions from bright pink in spring to purplish pink in autumn and winter. It is veined with deep red. In summer, from June to July, the foliage is enhanced by a delicate cream-white flowering, which contrasts beautifully with the leaf colour.

The heuchera ‘Berry Smoothie’ forms a lovely colourful groundcover, reaching 40 cm in height and 50 cm in width. It can be paired for example with white roses, blue flowers such as campanulas, the Omphalodes cappadocica ‘Starry Eyes’, blue hostas, or even spring-flowering bulbs. To lighten the bed, you can also plant grasses and ferns.

Heuchera ‘Berry Smoothie’

Heuchera 'Georgia Plum', a beautiful range of hues

The heuchera ‘Georgia Plum’ features beautiful foliage in shades of pink, purple, and silver. The leaves are evergreen and change hue throughout the seasons. They are topped, in June and July, with floral stems bearing delicate pale pink bells, creating a poetic and ethereal effect, which has earned heucheras their nickname of “painter’s despair.”

The heuchera ‘Georgia Plum’ forms a groundcover 30 cm high and 30 cm wide. For a stunning effect, you can plant it in groups of several plants. In a woodland border, pair it with ferns, grasses, and hostas. In a rockery, place a colourful mulch at its base to contrast with the foliage colours.

Heuchera 'Plum Royal', a beautiful contrast

The heuchera ‘Plum Royal’ offers evergreen, purple and glossy. The leaves are slightly silvered and veined with dark purple. This colour provides a beautiful contrast with the small white flowers, which appear on flowering stems in summer, between June and July.

It has a compact habit, reaching 35 cm in height and 30 cm in width. Use this heuchera as groundcover at the base of roses. You can also pair it with astilbes with fluffy white or pink spikes, as well as flowers in blue tones.

Heuchera ‘Plum Royal’

Heuchera 'Black Beauty', a dark foliage

The heuchera ‘Black Beauty’ features one of the darkest evergreen foliage in the range, a deep, glossy purple-brown. This perennial is tinged with black and ruby red highlights and has a magenta-purple underside. In June, small pale pink flowers add a bright and delicate touch to the plant.

It is a spreading groundcover, with foliage 25 cm high and 60 cm wide. Plant it in partial shade in borders, rockeries, or containers. You can pair it with blue flowers, such as campanulas, aquilegias, and brunneras, along with ferns like Adiantum pedatum or even with a blue-tinged grass, such as Elymus magellanicus.

Heuchera ‘Black Beauty’

Heuchera micrantha 'Palace Purple', an old variety

The Heuchera micrantha ‘Palace Purple’ features finely cut foliage with metallic reflections, ranging from coppery purple to indigo purple in summer. In June and July, small cream-white flowers add a touch of airy lightness, contrasting with the foliage.

This variety is an old favourite among gardeners. It forms a groundcover of 50 cm by 50 cm. It can be planted at the base of pale pink roses or paired with red plants, such as Lobelia ‘Queen Victoria’ and Aquilegia ‘Crimson Star’. Other colour combinations are possible. White will illuminate this purple heuchera, while blue will create a beautiful contrast.

Heuchera micrantha ‘Purple Palace’

Heuchera 'Cascade Dawn', a marbled foliage

The heuchera ‘Cascade Dawn’ features dark purple foliage marbled with silver-white and veined with red-purple. In June and July, the leaves are brightened by a creamy white flowering haze.

This heuchera forms a dense, evergreen cushion measuring 40 cm by 40 cm. Pair it with other heucheras in lighter shades and use it as groundcover at the base of roses, in combination with ferns and blue hostas or variegated hostas.

Heuchera ‘Cascade Dawn’

Heuchera 'Fire Chief', a burgundy red foliage

With its evergreen burgundy foliage, the heuchera ‘Fire Chief’ makes a stunning impact in any garden. The leaves, initially brick red, turn to a marbled purple-red with pink. In June and July, the foliage is topped with stems adorned with small bicoloured pink and white flowers.

This heuchera forms a cushion 45 cm high and 30 cm wide. In the garden, it pairs beautifully with echinaceas such as the varieties ‘Hot Summer’ in copper-orange hues or ‘Tomato Soup’ in red tones. You can also combine it with the vibrant tones of a red bush sage ‘Flammenn’ or an Achillea millefolium ‘Summerwine’.
