Small berries are borne on small bushes. They are easy to grow and will settle in the garden for many years. Raspberries, redcurrants, blueberries… the choice is vast! Discover how to plant them well in the garden.

Winter, Spring, Summer, Autumn Difficulty

Where to plant them?

To plant these small fruit plants, choose a sunny or partially shaded spot, sheltered from strong winds.

Some species, such as raspberries and blackberries, will need to be trained on a support. Other species, like currants or blackcurrants, have a semi-shrubby habit and can create a small edible hedge, in the garden or along the edge of a vegetable patch.

Blueberries can be integrated into a bed with acidic soil, alongside rhododendrons, azaleas, hydrangeas, or heathers. Finally, be aware that pot cultivation is possible for most small fruits (strawberries, raspberries, blueberries…), allowing you to enjoy summer flavours on a terrace or balcony.

It is often preferable to plant at least two plants to encourage fruiting.

In which soil?

Small fruits require rich, light, and well-drained soil. Enrich garden soil with compost or well-decomposed manure. Some plants thrive in acid soils, such as blueberry bushes and cranberries. In this case, incorporate heather soil or turf into the garden soil.

When and how to plant them?

When to plant small fruits?

Planting ideally takes place in autumn, especially for plants with bare roots. Container plants can be planted all year round, except during periods of extreme heat and frost, but watering should be increased in spring to ensure good establishment.

How to plant small fruits?

Soak the root ball in water for a few moments before planting or dip the bare roots in water if using a bare root plant. Dig a hole (three times the volume of the root ball), place the plant in, and cover with soil. Firm down well and water.

How to care for them properly?

Install a mulch at the base of the bushes. Add some compost or potting soil every spring, taking care not to damage the roots. It may sometimes be necessary to install a bird protection net, especially on strawberry plants. Easy to grow, small fruits are generally not very susceptible to diseases. Prune, if necessary, while respecting the requirements of each species.
