Which rhododendron to choose?

Many evergreen and floriferous varieties

Contents

Remarkably floriferous, with its beautiful evergreen foliage attractive all year round, the Rhododendron is among the most beautiful heather soil bushes. Beautiful in spring as well as in winter, it is a must-have for shady gardens. It forms spectacular kaleidoscopes of flowering in spring, ranging from pale pink to white, from crimson red to yellow or lavender, passing through all shades of pink. From very compact bushes perfect for edging borders, in rockeries, or even in planters on a terrace, to larger shrubs, each Rhododendron has its own characteristics. Slow-growing, it is a low-maintenance bush that is well-suited to small gardens or urban gardens.

Discover which one is best suited to your garden.

Difficulty

Small or large?

In the Rhododendron family, it’s all about size and therefore…space! The size of Rhododendrons ranges from 50 cm to over 5 metres in height. There are imposing bushes as well as dwarf varieties measuring 50 to 80 cm tall, forming spreading clumps, but all are remarkably floriferous.

This bush needs several years to sufficiently develop and express its full potential. It reaches its adult size in 10 years. Plant the tallest varieties in a sheltered wooded area to fill a hedge, while dwarf Rhododendrons can be placed in fresh rockeries, along the edges of flower beds exposed to partial shade, or in pots on a terrace.

Large Rhododendrons for the back of borders and shady slopes

Despite their often gigantic flowers, they maintain fairly reasonable proportions, forming large bushes 1.5 to 2 m high, often as wide at maturity. Some can be wider than they are tall, with a width of about 1.5 to 2.5 m. They grow slowly but surely. When planted alone or with other Rhododendrons of the same group, they create majestic, highly floriferous and colourful bushes in spring.

Small Rhododendrons for modest-sized gardens, borders, and shaded terraces

Their very slow growth and the modest dimensions of certain varieties such as yakushimanum and R. impeditum, which have produced many dwarf hybrids, allow for use in fresh rockeries and even pot cultivation on a shaded terrace. Perfectly hardy, most can withstand temperatures down to -15 °C, sometimes even lower.
