Description

Rhododendron 'Fragrantissimum' is one of the most fragrant. Its large fragrant flowers in pure white bells tinged with pink adorn an evergreen bush with an upright and airy habit. For sheltered locations.

Early in the season, as early as March, Rhododendron 'Fragrantissimum' opens its white flowers, tinged with pink on the reverse and with a touch of green in the throat. Of a good size, they reach up to 7.5 cm (3in) long and are grouped in corymbs, with up to 4 florets. Their exceptional fragrance diffuses over dozens of metres, particularly if the weather is mild and calm.

Resulting from the cross between Rhododendron edgeworthii and Rhododendron formosum, the hybrid 'Fragrantissimum' forms a bush with an upright habit, reaching approximately 1 m (3ft) in height . Its growth is rather loose and airy: it can be pruned to shape it. Its evergreen leaves are dark green, rather small, elliptical in shape, leathery, hairy, and deeply veined. Although it is a hybrid, its light habit and foliage allow it to maintain the natural elegance of botanical species!

Rhododendron 'Fragrantissimum' is hardy down to -8°C. It is therefore best reserved for gardens that are most sheltered from frost on the coast or in city centres. It prefers a semi-shaded exposure, sheltered from cold winds, if possible near a pathway to enjoy its exceptional fragrance. Slow-growing, this acid-loving bush prefers damp, humus-rich, well-drained soils. In regions with harsh climates, it is easy to cultivate in a pot to protect it in a cold greenhouse during winter or on a well-situated city balcony.

Planting and care

Plant Rhododendron 'Fragrantissimum' in a semi-shaded position, protected from cold and drying winds, in a damp, humus-rich, and light soil with an acidic tendency. Like all plants in the heath family, it does not tolerate limestone soils or heavy soils saturated with water in winter. Dig a hole three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-calcareous water and plant the shrub at the level of the collar, in a mixture composed of 1/4 compost, humus, gravel or pumice, and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer.

Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow and relatively limited root system. Therefore, they are sensitive to long periods of drought. That is why it is recommended to enrich the soil with humus beforehand and water abundantly with non-calcareous water during dry periods. In addition, this root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay pellets) when planting. Apply a mulch of shredded pine bark around the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture while keeping an acidic pH.

Maintenance involves removing old faded flowers in summer using pruning shears and clearing the plant of dead branches. Azaleas and Rhododendrons can sometimes be attacked by weevils that eat the edges of leaves and rootlets, as well as the infamous "rhododendron beetle" which does not often cause significant damage. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in Rhododendrons indicates poor iron assimilation in the soil and can lead to the premature death of the plant. While limestone is generally the cause, poorly-drained soil or deeply planted root balls can also explain the phenomenon.
