Our selection of large-growing clematis
Contents
The tallest clematis are from the botanical species Clematis montana, native to the Himalayas, a reliable floriferous climbing plant, which has given rise to numerous varieties widely used in our gardens. They can quickly cover large areas. Their foliage is deciduous, and their fragrant flowering develops in spring on voluble petioles before feathery fruits with silvery reflections take over. Discover our varieties with white or pink flowers, which reach a minimum height of 7 m and up to 10 m for the most vigorous.
Clematis montana 'Grandiflora'
The Clematis montana ‘Grandiflora’ is a very vigorous form of mountain clematis, among the most vigorous of climbing plants, which can reach up to 10 m in height under good conditions, covering an area of 12 to 20 m². It produces large pure white flowers measuring 8 cm, with a light yellow stamen centre. The flowers are star-shaped with 4 large ovate tepals that do not overlap. The fragrance of this variety is variable. Its deciduous foliage is dark green. It blooms profusely and late from spring to summer, between May-June and July.
This climbing clematis establishes itself on walls and pergolas or to conceal a garden shed or garage, or even an unsightly wall, in a slightly shaded position, as this variety tolerates shade better than others.

Clematis montana 'Starlet White Perfume'
With a more sophisticated appearance, the Clematis montana ‘Starlet White Perfume’ reaches 8 m in height at ripeness, sometimes 10 m. Its double flowers are large and white, with chartreuse stamens that tint the centre of the flower. They appear as early as April and are larger in diameter than those of the typical species. Slightly fragrant, they are very abundant and last for several weeks until May or June.
Install this clematis to cover a large area, such as a pergola or the branches of a tree. Plant smaller clematis at its base to cover the base of the plant, which is less floriferous.

Clematis montana 'Giant Star'
The Clematis montana ‘Giant Star’ can quickly produce long stems of 7 m with a spread of 6 m. This beautiful variety offers the largest flowers observed in clematis of this group, measuring approximately 10 cm in diameter. Semi-double, they form large stars of soft pink tinged with salmon. Their clove-like fragrance accompanies the spring flowering, from April to May, for at least 3 weeks. The dark green foliage is tinged with purple at this time of year, retaining this hue when exposed to sunlight.
In a romantic setting, this clematis adorns fences or hedges of evergreens, paired with a star jasmine for a bohemian touch.

Clematis montana 'Spooneri'
White-flowered variety, Clematis montana ‘Spooneri’, formerly known as Clematis chrysocoma var. sericea, is sometimes referred to as ‘Persian Fragrance’. It reaches up to 7 m in height, covering an area of 8 to 15 m². This clematis produces simple flowers, 8 cm in diameter, with 4 undulating petals of pure white and a heart of golden-yellow stamens, blooming late, between May and July. They flourish with incredible generosity on the previous year’s stems.
Plant it alongside a variety with simple pink flowers, and watch them entwine and climb a wall or pergola with their voluble stems.

Clematis montana 'Pink Perfection'
The Clematis montana ‘Pink Perfection’, highly floriferous and robust, reaches a minimum height of 7 m. Its young deciduous leaves, in shades of purple and copper, appear in spring. Then in May and June, the plant is completely covered with a multitude of flowers that have a subtle biscuit-like fragrance. These are followed by feathery decorative fruits and olive green foliage. Generally square in shape, they consist of 4 pink petals, lighter at the edges, measuring 5 cm in diameter. This variety, selected in 1950 and designed for large spaces, has proven its worth.
Often used on garden fences where they welcome visitors and delight passers-by, climbing clematis, which are easy to grow and maintain like the mountain clematis, deserve their popularity.

Clematis montana 'Tetrarose'
The Clematis montana ‘Tetrarose’ is one of the most commonly planted varieties of mountain clematis in our gardens. Its single flowers, an old rose colour with a slight blue tint and a heart of yellow stamens, measure about 5 cm. They overwhelm the foliage with their abundance from April to May, leaving behind a scent reminiscent of carnation. Very generous, this variety sometimes blooms again in summer or September, against a backdrop of bronze foliage. Awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society in England, it reaches a height of 7 to 8 m and spreads at least 3 m.
Plant it in fresh, deep, and fertile soil to cover a trellis or wall, in an English garden, with hardy geraniums at its base to protect it from the sun.
