Celebrated for their stunning colours and easy cultivation, viticella clematis will bring life to your garden, readily climbing along the trunks of trees and bushes, as well as on the structure of your pergola. Extremely floriferous and never diseased, they carpet these spaces with their white, pink, red, blue, or purple bells (sometimes even a bit of both!). Discover our selection of 7 varieties of blue-purple viticella clematis, complemented by some pairing ideas to showcase them beautifully and create a harmonious ensemble.
Clematis viticella 'Justa'
With a late flowering period extending from June to September, the Clematis viticella ‘Justa’ boasts lovely star-shaped luminous blue-violet flowers, featuring pinkish median lines that gradually give way to a beautiful lavender blue, enhanced by a generous bouquet of yellow stamens.
Feel free to carpet its base with lavender, to maintain the same tones and pair it with a Ceanothus ‘Marie Rose’ with its pale pink flowering, echoing the heart of our clematis ‘Justa’. Finally, if your arrangement allows, contrast our climber with a rose ‘Rambling Rosie’ in vibrant red!

Clematis viticella 'The President'
Obtained in 1873 by Charles Noble in England, the Clematis viticella ‘The President’ is one of the most widely planted varieties in French gardens: a popularity bolstered by bright flowers of a blue-violet with silver backs, which appear for the first time in early spring, before returning at the end of summer.
With it, you can play with colours and heights by pairing it with either Thalictrum rochebrunianum ‘Album’, with its white panicles, or with Artemisia lactiflora ‘Guizhou’, with its dark foliage contrasting with its ivory white flowering and a ‘Squaw’ monarda with its intensely red flowers.
Clematis viticella 'Sea Breeze'
Perfectly hardy and disease-resistant, the Clematis viticella ‘Sea Breeze’ comes to life from May to October, with purple buds transforming into large, star-shaped, bright lavender-blue flowers, featuring cream-coloured stamens.
You can easily pair it with other clematis, such as ‘Ascotiensis’, with deeper purple flowers, or Clematis ‘Inspiration’ to add fuchsia pink touches. Then, carpet their base with the lavender-blue, striated with purple of the Geranium nodosum, mixed with ‘Avelroz Dolmyf’ hydrangeas in bright pink with a white heart.
Clematis viticella 'Perle d'Azur'
Introduced in 1885, Clematis viticella ‘Perle d’Azur’ blooms from July to October, producing large star-shaped flowers with 4 to 6 petals measuring 10 to 12 centimetres in diameter. Its flowering displays a bright azure blue, complemented by hints of mauve and beautifully highlighted by its cream stamen.
This variety pairs perfectly with Clematis viticella ‘Étoile Violette’, which has a dominant violet hue (as its name suggests!), and features – very distinctly – the same heart of cream-yellow stamen.
Clematis viticella ‘Sugar Sweet’
With the sweet scent of acacia, Clematis viticella ‘Sugar Sweet’ forms luminous 6-petalled stars, measuring 8 to 10 centimetres in diameter, in a silvery mauve blue that appears between April and June.
This Dutch variety can be accompanied by Nepeta ‘Walker’s Low’ to echo its purple colour, as well as Salvia nemorosa ‘Blauhügel’ with its spike-shaped flowers of a deep blue. To add touches of colour here and there, it can also blend with ‘Bonica’ roses (soft pink), ‘Queen Elisabeth’ (salmon pink) or even ‘Sympathie’ roses (intense red). Not to mention Geranium psilostemon, with their beautiful magenta pink flowers featuring a black heart.
Clematis viticella 'Mon Amour'
Renowned for its generous flowering, the Clematis viticella ‘Mon Amour’ displays an original, very intense colour: from June to September, its star-shaped blue-mauve flowers feature a central area tinged with purplish pink, with a centre of violet stamens.
Enhance its magnificent colours with Hydrangea arborescens ‘Annabelle’ and its enormous cream-white ball-shaped flowers. Then, sprinkle their base with Hosta Stiletto, with its bright green foliage and fine cream-yellow margins.
