Clematite Sea Breeze - Clématite à grandes fleurs
Clematite Sea Breeze - Clématite à grandes fleurs
I am very disappointed with my clematis plants! Since they were planted, they have hardly ever bloomed... In early July, only two or three tiny flowers appeared, and since then, nothing... despite the care that has been given to them. Even the foliage struggles to stay on the trellis that was installed for them. And the same goes for the Hanagurana that was purchased and planted on the same day, as well as the Cardinal that was bought in 2018, which is still alive but stunted and without a single flower... I dare not order any more plants, despite the beautiful specimens shown in your catalogue...

Clematis Sea Breeze, a recent Canadian variety from the Vancouver series, is perfectly hardy, exceptionally floriferous, and disease-resistant. With a modest size, it fits easily in a small garden or in a pot on a patio. From May to October, this vibrant plant produces purple buds that open into large star-shaped flowers, with a bright lavender-blue colour sometimes touched with pink and enhanced by creamy stamens in the centre. This wonderful little climber should be planted in full sun or partial shade, in a romantic or English-style garden.
Clematis belong to the Ranunculaceae family. They can be found in both hemispheres, including Europe, the Himalayas, China, Australia, and North and Central America. This variety is a hardy semi-woody climbing plant that will reach a height of about 2m (7ft), with a minimum spread of 80cm (32in). It has the genes of C. viticella, a species that is particularly disease-resistant and thrives in relatively dry soils.
The star-shaped flowers with six petals, measuring 15 to 20cm (6 to 8in) in diameter, appear on the previous year's wood in May-June. They bloom again on the current year's growth, until the end of summer, or even into autumn. The flowers are either solitary or grouped in clusters and are particularly abundant. They are upright and have 6 undulate petals in a bright satin lavender-blue shade. The centre of the flower is adorned with a creamy-yellow stamen cluster. The flowering is followed by decorative feathery silver-grey fruits that persist until winter. The deep green and deciduous leaves are pinnate, with lanceolate leaflets with acute tips. This clematis clings to supports or host plants by means of petioles transformed into tendrils.
Plant your clematis alongside climbing roses to extend the flowering period of walls and pergolas until the end of summer. Place them next to beautiful perennials such as geraniums, carnations, sage nemorosa, and phlox, which will provide the shade it appreciates at its base. It is a rich and diverse genus, with varieties available in all colours, shapes, and sizes. Take advantage of their ease of cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian touch. Sea Breeze loves to weave its way through shrubs and performs very well in a large pot.

Botanical data
Clematis Sea Breeze will appreciate a sunny or lightly shaded position near a tree. Plant it in fertile, humus-rich soil that is especially well-drained, shading the roots and the base of the stem (with a flat tile, for example). Generally, clematis wilts in overly wet soil, but the Vancouver series varieties derived from C. viticella seem to be less sensitive. Work the soil to a depth of 20cm (8in), lightened with good quality compost and coarse sand. Plant it with the rootball at an angle, covering it with 3cm (1in) of soil. After planting, cut back the stems to about 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Water regularly and generously during the first few weeks. Do not overwater, as stagnant water can lead to the development of fungus at the base of the plant.
Mulch all clematis in February with garden compost or well-rotted manure, avoiding direct contact with the stems.
Train the stems, without squeezing them, until the plant can grip by itself. Clematis also like to grow freely on neighbouring plants.
Prune in February-March to 30cm (12in) from the ground, above a pair of buds.
After a few years, cover the base of your climbing clematis with a small mound of soil to reduce the risk of wilting and encourage vigorous shoots from the stump.
Voles and grey worms can attack clematis and devour the stems. Aphids and greenhouse whiteflies are also potential pests.

Hardiness is the lowest winter temperature a plant can endure without suffering serious damage or even dying. However, hardiness is affected by location (a sheltered area, such as a patio), protection (winter cover) and soil type (hardiness is improved by well-drained soil).
