Originating from the Himalayas, the clematis montana is a vigorous climbing plant, capable of reaching heights of 6 to 8 metres and quickly covering very large areas – whether it be a post, a staircase railing, a pergola, a wall, or a fence. With a spring flowering, clematis montana adorns itself with beautiful colours, ranging from sparkling white to purplish red.

Of the 200 species of mountain clematis, we have selected 10 varieties, featuring spectacular flowerings and delightful scents, ranging from vanilla to chocolate.

Clematis montana 'Mayleen'

Obtained in 1984 in England, Clematis montana ‘Mayleen’ offers an abundant flowering of soft pink, with a clove-like fragrance. Its small flowers, 5 cm in diameter, are identifiable by their cluster of yellow stamens at the centre, beautifully complemented by their bronze-green foliage. Resistant to diseases, this variety, with rapid growth, easily clings to a gable, a trellis, or decorates a tree beautifully.

Clematis montana 'Rubens Superba'

One of the most spectacular mountain clematis, Clematis montana ‘Rubens Superba’ blooms profusely in spring, producing lovely pale pink 4-petalled flowers with a hint of vanilla fragrance. The flowering is enhanced by purplish foliage and young reddish stems, which then turn to bronze-green over the weeks.

Clematis montana 'Van Gogh'

Rare but absolutely stunning, the Clematis montana ‘Van Gogh’ boasts small purplish-red flowers with yellow anthers, emitting a subtle vanilla fragrance. Its tripinnate leaves, both ovate and dentate, range from medium green to purple. At the end of the flowering period, small fruits appear with very decorative feathery styles.

Recent variety, the Clematis montana ‘Giant Star’ offers abundant flowering in spring, with semi-double flowers measuring 10 centimetres. Large stars in pink tinged with salmon, with a scent of vanilla and clove. After this ocean of pale salmon pink, it gradually reveals its foliage of a beautiful dark green, previously camouflaged by its large flowers.

Clematis montana 'Marjorie'

Early variety (around April), the Clematis montana ‘Marjorie’ reveals itself in spring with a creamy pink flowering and a vanilla scent. Small, yet very numerous, its semi-double flowers feature yellow anthers against a backdrop of green foliage, which takes on a bronze hue in autumn before disappearing. In summer, the fruit (which replaces the flower) resembles a plume.

Clematis montana 'Tetrarose'

Susceptible to slightly reflower in summer or autumn, the Clematis montana ‘Tetrarose’ produces small dark pink flowers, from which a light spicy and woody fragrance escapes. This is enhanced by purplish foliage. Grouped in axillary bouquets of 1 to 5 units, its flowers, measuring 4 to 6 centimetres in diameter, feature 4 rounded to ovate tepals that open in a star shape, surrounding yellow stamens at their heart.

Recognisable by the immaculate white of its flowering, Clematis montana ‘Wilsonii’ boasts abundant flowers throughout May, exuding a chocolatey fragrance. With 4 tepals, its flowers measure 4 to 6 centimetres in diameter, showcasing a bouquet of cream-yellow stamens beautifully highlighted by its bronze-green foliage.

New variety from a seed of the mountain clematis Sunrise, the clematis montana ‘Rosebud’ offers a spring flowering period of nearly a month, with a compact growth habit, making it easy to integrate into a wall or pillar. Its pink, semi-double flowers feature golden yellow stamens, with a base of white petals, beautifully highlighted by its medium green foliage.

Clematis montana 'Spring Joy'

Introduced to the Netherlands in 2015, this variety is slightly later flowering than other mountain clematis: the clematis montana ‘Spring Joy’ features small, light, single flowers with a clove-like fragrance, in brilliant white, set against dark green foliage. After flowering, the blooms give way to small decorative fruits, with a feathery, silvery-grey appearance.
