I have attached a photo of the plants. I think they came out of the trash bins. I haven't received a response. Yet, I believe I am a good customer. I am very disappointed. I will place other orders, but if I receive other defective products, it's over. Yours sincerely, M-A DOLL

Description

Clematis montana 'Van Gogh' is a rare climbing variety that reaches a height of 4m (13ft). It has small reddish-purple flowers with yellow anthers that are slightly fragrant. It earned the name of the Dutch painter due to its exceptional variable flowers.

This vigorous climber develops deciduous, ovate, toothed,  medium green to purple leaves, 8cm (3in) long. These leaves are borne by twisting stems that twine around their support with tendrils. From April to June, numerous single, reddish-purple flowers with yellow anthers, discreetly scented with vanilla and 4cm (2in) in diameter, grow on the previous year's branches. At the end of the flowering period, decorative seed heads appear, topped with feathery styles.

Clematis 'Van Gogh' thrives in clay-siliceous, light, deep, moist, and fertile soil, in a sunny location with the base in shade. Planting ground cover plants can provide this shade. Beware of aphids!

Clematis 'Van Gogh', when combined with other varieties or paired with a climbing rose, beautifully adorns walls, fences, bamboo pyramids, or the trunk of a tree.

Tips: Avoid excessive fertiliser application as it encourages foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to prevent excessive moisture that promotes clematis wilt.

Planting and care

Clematis 'Van Gogh' should be planted in spring or autumn, 5cm (2in) deep, with the root ball laid flat on the soil rather than vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the base in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to promote new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train the stems loosely until the plant clings by itself. Remove any dead or damaged stems after flowering.
