Swamp hibiscus or herbaceous hibiscus (H. moscheutos and H. coccineus), are slightly more frost-sensitive than Hibiscus syriacus and can be grown in any damp soil during summer. They are native to the marshy areas of the eastern and southern United States. With their lush appearance, they charm with their long summer flowering. Propagation by cuttings of herbaceous stems will allow you to easily obtain young plants.

When to take cuttings of swamp hibiscus?

Swamp hibiscus cuttings should be taken in June from herbaceous stems. At this stage, the plant has enough young stems that are robust enough to survive the cutting process. This warm time of year is the most suitable for making a so-called "suffocated" cutting.

How to take cuttings of swamp hibiscus?

  • Start by choosing a healthy stem about 15 to 20 cm long. Use clean pruning shears to cut the stem just below a node.
  • Remove all leaves from the lower part of the stem, leaving only a few upper leaves intact.
  • Dip the cut end in rooting hormone to stimulate root growth.
  • Insert the cutting into a pot or tray filled with a mixture of potting soil and perlite. Ensure the cutting is upright and water lightly.
  • Cover the pot with a clear plastic bag, a mini greenhouse, or a plastic lid to maintain a humid environment.
  • Place the pot in a bright location, but out of direct sunlight.
  • Check regularly to ensure the potting soil remains moist but not soggy.
  • After a few weeks, signs of growth should appear, indicating that the cutting has taken well. Then repot into a larger bucket.
  • Keep your young and fragile cutting protected from frost during winter by placing it in a cool, bright location, such as an unheated conservatory.
  • Plant in the garden the following spring.
