Often used in naturalistic gardens for their beautiful qualities and simple appearance, Achilleas are robust perennials, highly drought-resistant, suited to well-drained soil and full sun. They flower for a long time, from spring until autumn, depending on the variety. They display vibrant colours, ranging from yellow, pink, white, orange to red.

Let’s focus on the red Achilleas, which vary from brick red to cherry red and sometimes evolve into a faded gradient during their flowering. Discover our finest red varieties to ignite your garden.

Achillea millefolium 'Pomegranate'

Achillea millefolium ‘Pomegranate’ resembles the seeds of a pomegranate with its deep garnet red heads. It is a resilient variety: beautiful foliage, vigorous, with a long and abundant flowering period. Moreover, it is particularly heat-resistant. Like all Achilleas, its foliage is aromatic when crushed, but the corymbs of ‘Pomegranate’ also emit a spicy fragrance. It flowers from July to October, reaching a height of 70 cm in bloom and 30 cm for the foliage, with a spread of 60 cm. Its foliage is dark grey-green.

Plant it in a border or dry meadow alongside an Echium russicum, and a Geranium ibericum with blue flowers veined in purple. Add a mauve-pink Achillea and bulbs of Gladiolus italicus. Consider simple-looking perennials with similar growing conditions and vertical forms to highlight the Achillea and its flat umbels.

Achillea millefolium 'Red Beauty'

Achillea millefolium ‘Red Beauty’ is a variety ranging from bright red to purplish pink during its flowering period. Its heads are adorned with a white centre and form flat, slightly domed umbels, held well above the foliage. The plant reaches a height of 70 cm in flower and 60 cm in width, on an upright and compact clump. Very floriferous, it blooms from June to August in wide corymbs of 15 cm. It is quite repeat flowering if you take care to remove the faded flowers as they occur.

Create a rustic scene by pairing Achillea millefolium ‘Red Beauty’ with simple blooms such as those of Cephalaria alpina, and Verbascum ‘Gainsborough’ with its soft yellow. Accent with Sanguisorba officinalis ‘Morning Select’ featuring dark red spikelets and golden grasses.

Achillea millefolium 'Peggy Sue'

The adorable Achillea millefolium ‘Peggy Sue’ stands out with its deep red umbels adorned with a pronounced white centre. Very compact, it reaches 60 cm at ripeness in all directions. Its aromatic foliage is silvery green, feathery, and fine. It blooms tirelessly from July to September. It is semi-evergreen in some regions.

Plant it at the edge, on a bank, or in a flowering bed with deep blues like that of the Delphinium ‘Dark Blue-Black Bee’ and Salvia guaranatica ‘Black and Blue’. Add an exotic with dark foliage like the Canna ‘Durban’.

Achillea millefolium 'Petra'

The Achillea millefolium ‘Petra’ reveals itself in rosy red and then blooms into raspberry red at ripeness, all without weakening or fading! From June to September, its multiple red heads with pink centres, gathered in flat umbels, attract pollinators and enliven the garden with a continuously renewed flowering display. Reaching 60 cm in height when in flower with a similar spread, it forms a spreading and upright clump with fine, green, silvery, matte foliage.

Pair it with other Achilleas: white, pale yellow, mauve, and orange. Accent with light grasses such as Calamagrostis.

Achillea millefolium 'Desert Eve Red'

A very colourful variety, Achillea millefolium ‘Desert Eve Red’ displays brick-red flowering in large umbels of multiple heads with a golden-yellow centre. Robust, it generously rewards you with its bright, flat corymbs from May until September. Its foliage is dark green. This specimen is bushy and very compact, measuring 40 cm in all directions when in flower. Its red hue slightly fades to a pale pink at ripeness, offering a continuous palette of red and old rose. Its corymbs are approximately 10 cm in diameter and rounded.

You can choose to plant it in a pot, as its qualities are well-suited for this: its compact habit, undemanding nature, and low maintenance. Pair it with hardy geraniums like ‘Patricia’ and a purple heuchera like ‘Plum Pudding’.

Achillea millefolium 'Cassis'

More cherry than blackcurrant in colour, Achillea millefolium ‘Cassis’ boasts a sweet red that fades to pink, with capitula adorned with soft yellow. Compact and upright, it reaches 60 cm in height when in bloom and a minimum width of 50 cm, with foliage that does not exceed 20 cm. It flowers profusely from June to September, atop dark, matte green foliage.

Pair the achillea with bulbs of Allium sphaerocephalon, which has a similar colour and small spherical heads that beautifully punctuate the borders. Add a Salvia nemerosa ‘Mainacht’ with deep purple and lovely golden grasses like Stipa tenuifolia.
