Thanks to Jenny for preparing the order and ? from the shipping department, the plant I received is dormant but appears to be healthy. I've planted it near an arch, next to the 'Golden Age' rose and 'Brunette' clematis. Now I am patiently waiting for it to start growing again in spring (or not)...

Description

The Clematis macropetala 'Eximia' is a beautiful small climbing plant with double flowers and long pale violet tepals.

In April/May, this robust 2.5m (8ft) tall plant bears double flowers in open bell-shaped blooms, pale violet with cream-white anthers and long tepals, measuring 10cm (4in) in diameter. Its deciduous, elongated, medium green tripinnate leaves are carried by voluble stems that coil around their support with tendrils. At the end of flowering, fruits appear, topped by a silvery gray feathery style, which is highly decorative.

The Clematis macropetala 'Eximia' prefers a well-worked, deep, cool, and fertile clay-siliceous soil, in a sunny position with the base in shade. Plant ground cover plants to achieve this. It is well-suited for the East. Beware of aphids!

The Clematis macropetala 'Eximia' is ideal for flowering pots or on a small bamboo structure. Combine multiple species of clematis or pair it with a climbing rose!

Tips: Avoid excessive fertilizers that stimulate foliage growth at the expense of flowers. Do not mulch to prevent excessive moisture that promotes wilt disease.

Planting and care

The Clematis macropetala 'Eximia' should be planted in spring or autumn, at a depth of 5cm (2in), with the root ball placed flat on the soil rather than vertically as usual. The head should be in the sun and the base in the shade. Cover the base with a small mound of soil to promote new shoots. After planting, prune the stems to 30cm (12in) from the base, above a pair of buds. Train them loosely to help the plant attach itself later. Pruning afterwards involves removing any dead or damaged stems after flowering.
