A bulb planter is ultra practical for creating flower beds in spring. Very efficient thanks to its crutch handle, foot bar, and ultra-resistant blade, it is a very practical tool that minimizes the effort required and will protect your back thanks to its long wooden handle. Like all its stainless steel tools approved by the RHS (Royal Horticultural Society), this bulb planter is guaranteed for life by Burgon & Ball, but that's no reason not to take care of it, and we advise you to clean it after each use so that with each new planting preparation, it remains just as formidable!

The long-handled bulb planter from Burgon & Ball, is the tool you need if you want to paint your garden with bursts of color in spring by planting numerous bulbs. Thanks to its long certified FSC* hardwood handle, there's no need to bend down or work on your knees!

Bulbs are often planted in groups or masses to create dense and colorful patches in the garden. They need to be planted at a specific depth, often corresponding to twice the height of the planted bulb or more. This can be a tedious task, as it requires working close to the ground and involves repetitive movements when filling large beds and long borders. The bulb planter is the most suitable tool for quickly and accurately planting bulbs, and it should be carefully chosen based on the size of the bulbs and the requirements of each gardener. The body of the planter (its head) is used to :

  • extract a soil core to create a hole for the bulb
  • place the bulb in this hole, which has a cylindrical shape adapted to bulbs.
  • cover the hole by reintroducing the soil core that was removed.

The sharp and angled blade made of polished stainless steel greatly facilitates penetration into the soil, while the cutting tube makes it easy to release the soil plug. The sturdy foot bar allows you to apply the necessary force on difficult terrain. The wooden handle is compostable, and the metal head is recyclable.

* FSC is an international ecolabel guaranteeing that the wood comes from sustainably managed forests

Dimensions:

  • Total height of the tool: 110cm (43in)
  • Diameter of the blade: 6cm (2in)

  • Weight: 1.35kg

The English have the privilege of being the reference in gardening (if not in cooking). Promesses de Fleurs has chosen the English company Burgon & Ball for the quality of its materials and its nearly three-century-old steel manufacturing methods. The company has been working with steel in Sheffield since 1730, starting with a patent for solid steel sheep shears. The production of garden shears and equipment quickly surpassed that of sheep shears, but the stainless steel tools from Burgon & Ball are officially approved by the Royal Horticultural Society - probably the ultimate reward in the gardening industry.

The steel used for Burgon & Ball tools is alloyed with carbon to give it strength, and with chromium to prevent rust. It's a very precise balance that needs to be found between chromium and carbon, which is different for each part of the tool. For example, the socket, which must be strong enough to resist bending, is made of thicker steel with a balanced amount of chromium and carbon, while the blade of this bulb planter, which requires significant strength and hardness to withstand bending in the soil, is made with a higher carbon content than chromium.

The heat treatment allows for precisely giving the steel the right hardness for each tool. Too hard and the metal can break or chip, not hard enough and it will bend or lose its sharpness. The thickness of the steel used also depends on the tool. This bulb planter needs a thicker steel than a knife, which can be made of much thinner steel. The thickness of the steel also affects the weight, so it's a balance that the company Burgon & Ball with its nearly 300 years of experience has validated to ensure that its tools are both effective and pleasant to use.

Directions for use The Burgon & Ball long-handled bulb planter greatly facilitates the planting of bulbs, especially if you want a garden full of spring colours with many flower beds. Simply insert the bulb planter into the soil to the required depth, using the foot bar to push it in deeply. Use the handles to twist the planter, removing a plug of soil, and insert your bulb into the hole (pointed end up!). Move on to the next hole, and in doing so, the soil plug from the first hole is pushed out of the planter. Take this plug and put it back in its original hole, above your bulb. Repeat as necessary! The sharp and angled blade significantly facilitates penetration into the soil, while the cutting tube allows for easy release of the soil plug. The sturdy foot bar will enable you to apply the necessary force on difficult terrain. To maintain the beautiful appearance of your tool, we recommend cleaning it with a hard brush after each use and storing it away from moisture.
