The Chinese Azalea or Azalea mollis is a small humus-bearing bush from the genus Rhododendron, just like the Japanese Azalea. Both thrive in loose, non-calcareous soil. A few differences set them apart. The first: the Chinese Azalea is deciduous, unlike the Japanese Azalea, which retains its leaves all year round. The Chinese Azalea can be grown in full sun, is fragrant, and its foliage turns intensely coloured in autumn before leaf drop. Flowers begin to appear in spring on the naked bush. Its flowers have more varied shapes than those of the Japanese Azalea. Chinese Azaleas are slightly hardier than their Japanese cousins, tolerating temperatures down to -18° C, which corresponds to USDA zones 7a or 6b. They often have a looser habit and are taller, while Japanese Azaleas are lovely rounded bushes throughout the year.

While they come in a wide range of colours including oranges, pinks, and whites, some varieties display a very bright yellow.

Chinese Azalea 'Harvest Moon'

The Azalea ‘Harvest Moon’ produces stunning fragrant flowers in delicate pale yellow in spring. An old variety, its large undulating flowers measure 6 cm and emit a scent reminiscent of honeysuckle. They bloom before the foliage appears, in a very soft shade of cream yellow with a warmer centre and a wash of light salmon. They are adorned with long decorative stamens. The foliage is dark green, turning into sumptuous bronze-copper and dark red tones in autumn. This Azalea reaches a height of 1.20 m and a width of 1 m at maturity, with a slightly upright bushy habit. It flowers in April-May for a lovely period, first on the bare stems, then simultaneously with the young leaves.

Plant it in partial shade to fully enjoy its delicate colour and light, alongside Camellias and Hydrangea macrophylla in soft hues as well. Add Hakonechloa for the foliage.

Chinese Azalea 'Cannon's Double'

The Azalea mollis ‘Cannon’s Double’ boasts a stunning flowering display: semi-double trumpet flowers measuring 7 cm, pale pink edged with pink and a yellow centre. At maturity, this Azalea reaches a height of 1.20 m and a spread of 1 m with an upright habit. Its foliage is soft and light green. In May and June, it blooms profusely in dense terminal bouquets of open trumpet flowers measuring 7 cm.

In partial shade, its refined and delicate colour stands out better, and its soft foliage remains unaffected. Pair it with pink Heathers, white Pieris, and soft yellow Camellias.

Chinese Azalea or Rhododendron Luteum

Here is a botanical species, the Rhododendron luteum, also known as the Yellow Pontic Azalea and Honeysuckle Azalea for its highly fragrant yellow flowering. It is a large azalea, reaching up to 1.75 m in height and 1.50 m in spread. Hardy down to -26° C, it has a broad, rounded silhouette and spreads slowly. It flowers abundantly and late, at the end of May or in June depending on the climate. Its flower, measuring 4 cm in diameter, is bright yellow. It emits a powerful scent of honeysuckle, fresh and herbaceous. Its leaves are acid green at bud break, deep green in summer, and explore the range of typically autumnal shades in October: orange, red, and purple. Notably, it has a deep root system, which is atypical for a heather soil bush, and does not like to be moved.

In the back of a border, it can be paired with Viburnum, Eleagnus, or Strawberry Trees, as well as with Magnolias.

Chinese Azalea 'Narcissiflora'

As its name suggests, the Chinese Azalea ‘Narcissiflora’ evokes the flowers of certain botanical Daffodils. It is a very beautiful hybrid, with a light and refined flowering, fragrant. It blooms abundantly in April-May with small, semi-double flowers measuring 4 cm, in a soft yellow. It has a bushy, ramified, and spreading habit, being both tall and bushy. It reaches 1.40 m in height and 1.20 m in width at 10 years, but can ultimately grow up to 2 m in height under good growing conditions. The spicy fragrance of its star-shaped flowers is quite pronounced, reminiscent of certain daffodils, and the long arched stamens add to the charm of the flowers. The leaves, dark green in summer, turn yellow-orange in October.

This Azalea enjoys a sunny to partially shaded position; pair it with other Chinese Azaleas in orange, red, or white tones near the house to enjoy its fragrance.

Chinese Azalea 'Klondyke'

Here is the yellow Azalea ‘Klondyke’, full of flamboyance. Its flowering reveals a vivid yellow-orange colour, with coppery reflections and reddish undersides, sparkling. The foliage transitions from a wise dark green in summer to orange and then dark red in autumn. This cultivar has been awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society and the American Rhododendron Society for its qualities. Vigorous and robust, floriferous and well-scented, it reaches 1.20 m in height and nearly the same in width at ripeness. Its habit is rather upright, and its silhouette is a blend of grace and bushy presence. Its flowers are quite large, 5 cm, crinkled, with very undulating edges. Their honeysuckle fragrance fills the air during flowering in April and May.

Plant it alongside light and graceful bushes like bushy Fuchsias with small pendulous flowers, and near a Japanese Maple that will accompany its colour changes in similar tones.

Chinese Azalea 'Persil'

Bicolour azalea, the Azalea ‘Persil’ is a reliable choice and a marvel of refinement with its orchid-like flowers. These white flowers, wonders of freshness, are enhanced by a striking golden-yellow maculate pattern, visible even from a distance. An older variety awarded by the Royal Horticultural Society of England, it has a bushy and spreading habit, reaching a height of 1.20 m and a width of 1 m at ripeness. It blooms from April to May, depending on the climate, for several weeks, coinciding with the appearance of the first leaves. Its flowers are large, measuring 7 cm in diameter, with undulating edges, star-shaped and featuring long, arched stamens. Its foliage turns bronze and brown in autumn.

Pair it with yellow or white blooms as well as soft pink, alongside Camellias, Hydrangeas paniculata, and Pieris.
