BEAUTIFUL, both in terms of colour and fragrance. Especially in the evening, it exudes a scent. Maintenance is reduced to removing faded flowers for a new abundant flowering the following year. It is next to a rhododendron 'Marcel MENARD'. The 2 colours blend perfectly well.

Description

The Chinese Azalea 'Berryrose' has large fragrant and colourful flowers, with a subtle old rose maculated with yellow-orange hue, blooming in April-May, enhanced by coppery young shoots. It is a bush of heathland soil, deciduous and of medium development.

A very beautiful old variety from the "Exbury" group, the deciduous Azalea 'Berryrose' has a bushy habit and reaches a height of 1.20m (3ft 11in) with a spread of 1m when fully grown. Its ovate and flexible deciduous leaves are a lovely bright green while the young shoots have a beautiful coppery colour that matches the flowering. The large-sized flowers have a widely open trumpet shape. They have an old rose colour with a wide yellow-orange throat and emit a subtle fragrance.

Hardy down to -20°C, the Chinese Azalea 'Berryrose' will appreciate a semi-shaded exposure. This heathland soil bush likes fresh, humus-rich and well-drained soils with a acidic tendency. Plant deciduous azaleas in groups in heathland soil, on a slope, in a rockery or at the edge of a flower bed, to enjoy their fragrance and bright flowering, accompanied by Pieris, Heathers, Kalmias, Andromedas and other Japanese Maples..

Divided into 2 horticultural groups, the genus Rhododendron includes on one hand the Azaleas, Chinese and Japanese, with small evergreen or deciduous leaves, with 5 stamens per flower, and on the other hand the Rhododendrons, with large, evergreen and glossy foliage, and flowers with more than 10 stamens. Although highly debatable from a botanical point of view, this classification is still widely used by horticulture professionals.

Planting and care

Plant the Chinese Azalea 'Berryrose' in a non-burning sunny or semi-shady location, protected from cold and drying winds, in a fresh, humus-rich and light soil with an acidic tendency. Like all heathland plants, it does not tolerate limestone soils or heavy soils saturated with water in winter. Dig a hole with a volume three times larger than the pot. Soak the root ball in non-limestone water and plant the bush at the level of the collar, in a mixture composed of 1/4 peat, leaf compost, gravel or pumice and loam. Water generously and keep the soil moist in summer. Azaleas and Rhododendrons have a shallow root system. Therefore, they are sensitive to long periods of drought. That is why a humus-enriched soil and abundant watering during dry periods are recommended. In addition, this root system is not very strong, which is why it is essential to lighten heavy soils with draining materials (gravel, pumice, clay pellets) when planting. Apply a mulch of shredded pine bark at the base of the bush every spring to maintain soil moisture while preserving an acidic pH. Maintenance consists of pruning faded flowers in summer and cleaning dead branches. Yellowing of the leaves (chlorosis) in Azaleas and Rhododendrons indicates poor assimilation of iron in the soil and can cause premature death of the plant. While limestone is often the cause, poorly drained soil or a deeply planted root ball can also explain the phenomenon.
