Climbing white-flowered plants are a dream with their elegance as they ascend walls and supports. Rather compact or capable of reaching several metres depending on the species and cultivars, they delight gardeners with their sometimes simple, sometimes more sophisticated flowers, adorning the garden with brightness and refinement, and for some, infusing divine fragrances. Here, we present a selection of 6 essential climbing plants with magnificent white flowerings.

Rosa 'Climbing Iceberg' or Snow Fairy Climbing Rose

Well-known among gardeners, the ‘Iceberg’ rose is a remarkable shrub rose, impressive for its abundant pure white flowering and ease of cultivation. It is available in a climbing version, called Rosa ‘Climbing Iceberg’ or the climbing rose ‘Fée des neiges’. This exceptional rose can reach heights of 5 metres and is as floriferous as its parent. From June to October, it produces a multitude of semi-double flowers measuring 5 cm in pure, brilliant white. With its snow-like colour, it brightens up walls, arches, or pergolas during the sunny days. It is a hardy climbing rose, vigorous and relatively resistant to diseases.

It prefers sunny spots but also thrives well in partial shade, taking care to avoid stagnant moisture. For a beautiful and prolonged flowering, train the branches horizontally.

Clematis diversifolia 'White Arabella'

Recently obtained, Clematis diversifolia ‘White Arabella’ boasts beautiful qualities to adorn a trellis in a romantically charming garden. Its generous and long flowering period extends from June to September-October: first in spring with pure white and semi-double flowers, followed by simple flowers with curled petals measuring 5 to 7 cm in diameter. These flowers are succeeded by feathery grey-silver fruits, decorative until winter. The deciduous foliage is a rather dark green, and the plant clings to supports thanks to its petioles transformed into tendrils. Very hardy and easy to grow, ‘White Arabella’ remains modest in size, reaching 1.50 m in height with a spread of 1.00 m; making it easy to find a place for it in the ground, as well as to install it in a pot or large planter.

Awarded a bronze medal at the Plantarium in Boskoop in 2019, this magnificent pure white clematis loves sunny locations, fertile, humus-bearing, and well-drained soils. Like other clematis, it requires shade and coolness at its base.

Hydrangea petiolaris 'Flying Saucer' or Climbing Hydrangea

Among the climbing plants for shade or partial shade, the climbing hydrangea stands out. The Hydrangea petiolaris ‘Flying Saucer’ is a particularly ornamental cultivar, with its white flower umbels being even larger than those of the species. These nectariferous, flattened flowers are gathered in large white umbels reaching up to 30 cm in diameter and cover the plant from late May to July depending on the climate. They slowly dry, passing through subtle green hues before turning brown. ‘Flying Saucer’ features the characteristic lush green deciduous foliage of hydrangeas and clings on its own thanks to its climbing roots.

This is a vigorous climbing plant, ideal for cool exposures on a north or east-facing wall, and it can also be used as groundcover. It thrives in fertile, deep, and not too dry soils.

Trachelospermum jasminoides 'Star Of Venice' or White Star Jasmine

Among the climbing plants suited to mild climates, the essential Star Jasmine enchants us with its unparalleled fragrance. The Trachelospermum jasminoides ‘Star Of Venice’ is a compact cultivar (3.00m in height and 1.50m in width) and highly floriferous. In successive waves from late spring to the end of summer, it will be covered in small, star-shaped white flowers, delicately scented, contrasting with its bright green evergreen foliage that takes on a reddish hue in winter.

The voluble stems of the Star Jasmine climb or sprawl in full sun or partial shade, ready to ascend supports or cover the ground in a border. Easy to cultivate, it is hardy down to -10°C in well-drained soil.

Fast-growing, the Passiflora caerulea ‘Constance Elliott’ will delight your terrace in summer, thanks to its large, immaculate and slightly fragrant flowers. The white Passion Flower ‘Constance Elliott’ is undoubtedly one of the hardiest of all Passiflora species. After the flowering period, which spans from May to October, orange fruits sometimes follow. It is a climbing plant reaching heights of 5 to 10 m and the same in width.

Quite hardy, it is easy to grow in the garden: place it against a wall, a pergola, or even at the base of a tree, where it will cling using its tendrils.

Wisteria sinensis 'Alba' or White Chinese Wisteria

Celebrating the arrival of spring, the white Chinese Wisteria Wisteria sinensis ‘Alba’ blooms in April – May and its large clusters of flowers stand out beautifully against its golden-green foliage. These generous and long white clusters, measuring 30 to 60 cm in length, emit a sweet honey fragrance that is hard to resist. Often flowering again in mid-summer, it is very prolific both in its flowering and growth. Capable of climbing over 9 m and spreading up to 4 to 5 m, it quickly produces dense vegetation. Its long shoots form sturdy branches that embrace the supports it climbs: pergolas, walls, trellises, or arbours.

Easy to cultivate, the white Chinese Wisteria thrives in all regions, adapts to all types of soil, and withstands both cold and heat as well as drought.
