Description

Helleborus x nigercors is a bushy hybrid originating from the Helleborus niger (Christmas Rose) and the Helleborus argutifolius (Corsican Hellebore). From January to March, large green flowers measuring 7 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) in diameter appear.

This is a sterile hybrid, which is very difficult to propagate vegetatively. It is a sturdy plant, not too tall (30 cm (12in) in height) with very attractive dark green foliage that is evergreen and quite tough. Its basal and palmatilobate leaves (palmate leaves formed by poorly cut lobes) measure 10 to 30 cm (4 to 12in) long.

This Hellebore is hardy down to -20°C (-4°F). It has winter interest. One of its main advantages is its long flowering period. It is perfect for cut flowers. Also, it provides good ground cover. It pairs well with ferns or Iris foetidissima, lamium maculatum 'Beacon Silver', and Erythronium. It is a toxic flower.

Planting and care

Helleborus x nigercors loves rich, rather heavy and well-worked soil. Plant it in partial clear shade in neutral to alkaline, fertile and humus-bearing soil that is moist and incorporate good compost to help it establish. Hellebore does not like stagnant water which may cause it to rot. It is happy planted under the clear shade of large leafy trees. They are easy-to-care-for plants, but should not be stressed. These perennials also have a reputation for being homebodies: once they are well-established, they do not like to be transplanted. Young plants may take 2 to 3 years to flower, sometimes more, but then they will have no problems. Over the weeks, their colour darkens but they do not fade like most flowers, they dry up.
