Description

Excellent evergreen perennial for cool shade, Bergenia ciliata is highly valued for its villous foliage, with an exotic appearance.

Hardy and perennial, Bergenia ciliata forms large creeping stumps, slowly spreading on the ground. Its very unique foliage is not glabrous like its counterparts, but villous. It forms large rosettes of evergreen leaves, up to 30-40cm (12-16in) in diameter, round, luxuriant, and covered in numerous stiff, soft-to-touch hairs.

More classic, its trailing white bell-shaped flowers are borne on short inflorescences. With a long lifespan, Bergenia ciliata adapts to various conditions, and can live for decades without any special care, but it thrives best in partial shade, in rich, cool, and light soil.

Plant Bergenia ciliata in a cool rock garden, at the edge of a woodland, or on a partially shaded slope, alongside Epimediums, Brunneras, perennial geraniums, Omphaloides, and ferns.
