These small clumps of turf and perlite are ideal for sowing or propagating plants, as they provide a suitable medium for germination and the development of young roots. They are surrounded by a non-woven fabric that allows roots to permeate. Fertiss only requires watering before use. There is no need to disturb the clumps when repotting or planting. Sold in a tray of 104 clumps, each measuring 3cm (1in) in height and 3cm (1in) in diameter at the base.

These ready-to-use Fertiss plugs are highly recommended by professionals for sowing, propagation by cuttings, and even in vitro cultivation. They are small plugs made of turf and perlite, surrounded by a non-woven fabric. This growing substrate encourages the development of delicate first roots, and the non-woven fabric lets them penetrate its fine mesh. At this stage, the young plant is ready to be transplanted into a larger pot to strengthen it before potential planting. Unlike dehydrated pellets, Fertiss is a moist product that only requires watering before use. There is no need to remove the plugs when repotting or planting. Sold in trays of 104 small plugs, each measuring 3cm (1in) in height and 3cm (1in) in diameter at the base.

Fertiss plugs have many advantages. They are ready to use and easy to store. They are perfect for sowing large quantities of plants in greenhouses or indoors early in the season, which is very useful when multiplying or cultivating slow-growing vegetables or flowers. They are also particularly well-suited for plants with fragile roots that do not tolerate handling and transplanting well. Composed of blonde peat and perlite, the growing substrate reduces planting stress compared to more artificial supports. With its natural flora, peat is less susceptible to colonisation by soil pathogens. It contains certain additives, but no classical NPK fertilisation. Fertilisation should be added either immediately for highly demanding plants (petunias), or when the first roots appear.

Product advantages:

  • Very easy transplanting: FERTISS has a consistency that allows for easy insertion and good support of the cuttings. The absence of pre-drilling prevents the formation of an air pocket at the base of the cutting, which would hinder the development of the callus that produces the first roots
  • Very rapid rooting: the ideal balance between air content, water retention, and adhesion between the substrate and the plant allows for very rapid rooting. The plants can be transplanted as soon as the first roots have pierced the non-woven fabric
  • Unmatched success rates: FERTISS guarantees 100% success in most cases, with uniform crops
  • Air circulates easily around Fertiss plugs. When the roots have penetrated the non-woven fabric, their length growth stops. Secondary roots and root buds develop at the same time. This phenomenon minimises root deformations and improves subsequent recovery
  • Very quick repotting: the geometry and stability of the plugs facilitate repotting. The quality of the root system leads to rapid recovery

For professional use

The trays can be used for storage and transport, and some trays are even suitable for automated transplanting. FERTISS plugs are arranged in standardised trays (Danish, European, US) that are perfectly suited for shipping young plants in cardboard or rolls.

Usage

Sow one seed per plug, if possible. Use tweezers for very fine seeds, or place a tiny pinch of seeds that you can thin out once the seedlings have emerged. This technique is suitable for multiplying all plants suitable for plug production. It can be used for sowing flowers or vegetables, as well as for small cuttings. As soon as the rootlets appear through the filament, you can repot or plant the entire plug directly in the ground, which facilitates recovery.

Note

FERTISS plugs are available in a wide variety of sizes and presentations. They can be delivered without trays, arranged in cardboard boxes. They are most often used already arranged in a tray specially designed for each plug size, with a choice of several densities and different tray formats.
