Sisal is the common name for several plants in the Agave family, including Agave sisalana native to arid areas of Mexico. It is also the name given to the plant fiber found in their long leaves. Very resistant, this fiber is used for making ropes, coarse and hardy fabrics, and tapetum. However, when exposed to the elements, sisal fiber degrades quite quickly without leaving any residue in the environment. Sisal is now primarily cultivated in Africa, particularly in Mozambique, which exports its production to France.
