Crinum asiaticum - Asian Crinum

Originating from the tropical regions of Asia, Crinum asiaticum, also known as Asian Crinum or Spider Lily, is an impressive bulbous plant from the Liliaceae family. It originates from a very large cylindrical bulb measuring 10 to 15 cm in diameter and weighing over 5 kg, with deep roots. Its evergreen foliage consists of broad, ribbon-like, thick leaves shaped like gutters, ranging from 60 cm to over 1 m in length, forming a clump over 1.5 m tall and 80 cm wide. From June to August, and also repeatedly throughout the year in warm conditions, it bears 15 to 50 white flowers with a distinctly exotic appearance, delicately scented with vanilla and spices, opening one after another. They have a shape of finely cut open cup corollas—hence the name Spider Lily—with pink-purple stamens standing out against their immaculate whiteness.

This very beautiful plant retains its foliage in regions spared from frost, prefers warm, humid climates with dry winters, fresh soil, and sunny exposure. Perfectly tolerant of sea spray and saline soils, Crinum is ideal for seaside gardens. If you cannot provide the temperature conditions it requires, grow it in a pot, which you should winter at temperatures between 8 and 10 °C to respect its dormancy period.

Hardy down to -6.5 °C (Zone 9a), like other Cannas, ‘Cleopatra’ will appreciate rich, moist, well-drained soil and a sunny location for generous flowering. If your climate does not allow for planting in the garden, place it in a container or pot with 1/3 good potting mix combined with 2/3 garden soil. Remember to water it abundantly and cut the foliage back to the ground before winter, a period it will spend covered with a good protective mulch.

As it is a frost-sensitive plant, it is best to install it in a large pot, which you can bring indoors in autumn, when it enters dormancy. You can also plant it in the ground after the last frosts, in a sheltered and sunny spot, in fresh soil. In this case, remember to dig it up and store the bulbs in a pot or tray, covered with turf.

Habenaria radiata - Dove Orchid

Get close to the soil to admire this incomparable rare plant known by the poetic name of Dove Orchid: the Habenaria radiata. Native to Japan, this terrestrial orchid is a poem in itself.
