Description

This Astilbe develops paniculate plumes composed of tiny, purple flowers in early summer. The inflorescences dry up in shades of brown and remain attractive throughout the winter.

The cut flowers are superb in a vase, but they don't last long.

Plant them in a moist and shady flower bed with other perennials. They like to be in a woodland area or by the water's edge.

Planting and care

To plant your astilbe, work your soil to a depth of 20 cm (8in), breaking it up well and placing a base fertiliser such as bonemeal at the bottom of the planting hole. Remove your plant from its pot and position, covering the top of the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil. Fill in the hole and water generously to eliminate any air pockets. Regular watering is necessary for a few weeks to aid root growth in dry weather. Astilbes thrive in marshy areas in sunny or partially shaded locations. They do not tolerate chalky soil that dries out in summer. Spring frosts can damage the flowers and young leaves.

Care

Pruning instructions Prune the faded flowers to promote better foliage development. The flowering stems can also be left in place to decorate the garden during the winter season, simply cut them back to 10 cm (4in) the following spring. It is important to avoid digging near these plants, as the roots develop close to the surface. These flowers are disease-resistant and rarely attacked by insects. While slugs ignore them, they can be susceptible to powdery mildew and fungal spots.
Pruning Pruning recommended once a year
Pruning time February to April
Overwinter Can be left in the ground
