The received cutting appears to be healthy. Planted at the base of a Callistemon, I am now waiting for it to take root... (or not?).

Description

Paeonia 'Coral Sunset' is a perennial hybrid of Chinese peony. This variety is very rare. In May, double flowers emerge, releasing a gentle fragrance. The flowers are a peach to coral-pink colour. The colour fades with age. The centre of the flower is composed of long golden stamens.

The flowers are perched on numerous, thick sturdy stems. The foliage is deciduous. This peony is very hardy. It grows rapidly and can reach a height of 70 to 90cm (28 to 35in).

Place your peony in flower beds. When cut, its flowers will form beautiful bouquets. 'Coral Sunset' has received the Gold Medal award from the American Peony Society. Herbaceous peonies remind us of the scent and beauty of our grandmothers' gardens, where they were often present.

Our bouquet secret: Cut your peonies at dawn when the buds start to colour.

Planting and care

Place it primarily in the sun. However, you can plant it in partial shade in very hot regions. Plant it from September to May, preferably in autumn. Plant in fertile and deep, humus-bearing, moist but well-drained soil to prevent the roots from rotting. Choose neutral or acidic soil. Add compost or manure in autumn and spring. Easy to grow, peonies require little maintenance. During planting, dig a large hole measuring 40 to 50cm (16 to 20in) on each side and add potting soil, river sand, and turf. Place the collar 6cm (2in) below the surface. Space the peonies 60cm (24in) apart as they need room and do not like competition from other species. Ideally, plant them in pairs or threes. Keep the soil moist throughout the growing season with regular watering. Apply a mulch in winter in cold regions. Peonies have a reputation for being homebodies. Therefore, they should not be moved after planting. If you do move them, they need to be divided, otherwise they may not flower for several years. From February to April or October to November, cut the foliage to ground level. Provide support for the flower stems and remove faded flowers during the season. Protect peonies from viruses, nematodes, and thrips larvae. Armillaria (honey fungus) can cause rapid plant death, and stem rot destroys shoots and flower buds.
