Description

Sedum 'Matrona', or stonecrop, is a late flowering perennial. It blooms from August to October. It offers numerous and wide cymes composed of small light-pink star-shaped flowers. These cymes measure 15cm (6in) in diameter and are suspended from upright purple stems.

Its deciduous foliage is green with a hint of purple. The leaves measure 6cm (2in) in length. The flowers can be dried.

At maturity, it can reach a height of 60cm (24in). Native to the Northern Hemisphere, particularly Europe, it has excellent hardiness. The plant is melliferous, bringing joy to butterflies and pollinating insects. This autumn sedum can be found in gravel gardens accompanied by grasses, in sunny flower beds, as well as in rockeries and borders.

It is also a good ground cover. You can cultivate it in containers with other sedums. It thrives in coastal areas. Plant Sedum 'Matrona' with bronze fennel and Cynara cardunculus. You can also plant it with euphorbias.

It was once used in folk medicine for the treatment of burns, cuts, and bleeding.

Planting and care

Sedum 'Matrona' thrives in full sun, even scorching sun. Plant it in ordinary, not too rich, rather dry and well-drained soil. It is an undemanding plant. For planting, prepare a hole measuring 30cm (12in) in all directions. Do not provide too much water. At the end of winter, cut the stems from the previous year to make room for new shoots and maintain a compact shape. Sedum does not tolerate winter moisture well.
