Parcel received at the pick-up point, but 6 days after dispatch, instead of the advertised 2 to 3 days, which could be a problem as it was a package of bare-root trees... ???? We'll have to see if they survived the journey without drying out.

Description

Acer tataricum ssp. ginnala, also known as the Amur maple, is a fast-growing bush with deeply cut, tender green foliage that turns yellow-orange to bright red in the autumn.

Originally from Asia, this beautiful hardy bush reaches a height of 4 m to 5 m (13.1 ft to 16 .4 ft). It has a spreading habit, with thin and arching branches. The deciduous, opposite leaves are 5 cm to 10 cm (2 in to 3.9 in) long, deeply cut, and initially green, before turning yellow-orange and finally bright red in autumn. In June, discreet clusters of cream-white, fragrant flowers that are 3 cm (1.2 in) long bloom and then give way to pink winged fruits.

Easy to grow, Acer ginnala thrives in moist, fertile, well-worked and well-drained soil, in a sunny but not scorching location. It can tolerate partial shade. Find a spot sheltered from strong winds.

Acer ginnala is ideal when placed individually in the middle of a short grass meadow or at the base of large trees to create an intermediate vegetal screen. It can also be trained as a bonsai.

Tip: Prune every 3 to 5 years to balance the branches and maintain a harmonious habit.

Planting and care

Acer ginnala should be planted in the spring or autumn in any fertile, deep, and moist soil in a sunny position, but not in direct sunlight. It can tolerate partial shade. Beware of strong winds. Keep the soil moist during the first two summers after planting. Mulching can be beneficial to maintain soil freshness. Young plants require pruning to shape their branches, and then every 3 years to balance the canopy and maintain a harmonious habit. Avoid pruning after December as sap rises early.
