Description

Pyrus Calleryana 'Chanticleer' is a Decorative Pear with ornamental fruits. Its habit is conical and compact, reaching up to 10 m (32.8 ft). Its deciduous foliage is shiny dark green and usually turns a beautiful red-purple colour in autumn .

In spring, it is covered with umbels of white flowers. In autumn, brown fruits resembling small pears with a diameter of 1 cm (0.4 in) appear, which persist throughout the winter.

This ornamental pear can be planted in ordinary, dry to moist soil, in a sunny location. It is very hardy and should be planted individually.

Planting and care

Easy to grow, it requires little maintenance. Plant in full sun, in moist, fairly rich and well-drained soil. Dig a large planting hole. If the soil is poor, add compost to the planting soil. Plan for winter pruning to remove dead or diseased wood and maintain a balanced habit.
