5 Agapanthus to grow in pots
Our selection of small and compact agapanthus
Contents
Agapanthus are beautiful perennials with summer flowering. They display delicate, colourful spikes, typically blue, purple, or white. Their bushy foliage and vertical lines are highly valued for the touch of lightness and graphic appeal they bring to the garden, whether in borders or in beds.
Agapanthus are easy to grow in full sun, in rich, well-drained soil. They also lend themselves very well to flowering pots. Indeed, agapanthus thrive in confined spaces, making them ideal for pot cultivation.
Dwarf agapanthus varieties are particularly suited to this method of cultivation, allowing the less hardy candidates to be brought indoors for winter protection.
Here is our selection of 5 perfect agapanthus for pots.
The 'Golden Drop' agapanthus: a beautiful variegated foliage
TheAgapanthus ‘Golden Drop’ not only offers a beautiful blue-grey flowering, leaning towards lavender, but it also boasts a rare and highly decorative variegated foliage. Its very fine light green leaves are adorned with pale yellow and cream, creating a truly luminous, airy ball. Deciduous, they disappear in autumn.
The umbels contain 7 to 10 campanulate flowers, bringing life to the garden throughout the summer, from June to August.
The compact and light silhouette of ‘Golden Drop’, not exceeding 40 cm in all directions, makes it an essential candidate for flowering pots.
Like all agapanthus, it requires a sunny position and well-drained soil to thrive. It offers moderate hardiness of -10 to -12°C, allowing it to remain in pots on terraces and balconies in coastal regions or the south during mild winters.
This bulbous plant will fit well in both a natural garden and a modern garden or urban terrace.

Agapanthus: planting, growing and careThe ‘Strawberry Ice’ agapanthus: a bicolour variety with uncommon pink hues
TheAgapanthus ‘Strawberry Ice’ is surprising due to its colour: it is one of the few agapanthuses with pink flowers. Its flowers in umbels measuring 8 to 10 cm of pure white are indeed adorned with soft pink notes, as if painted with watercolour. These shades are particularly visible as the plant reaches ripeness and during cool summer nights.
The upright habit of the flowers is also uncommon, as they are directed towards the sky rather than horizontally or downwards, adding a lot of verticality.
This summer flowering occurs from July to September and lasts for just over a month. It is enhanced by beautiful ribbon-like foliage, forming a very graphic dark green clump.
This foliage is evergreen, but the plant is still somewhat hardy, down to -10°C. The pot should therefore be brought in to protect it from frost in regions with harsh winters. Another strong point: it tolerates summer drought better than deciduous varieties.
At maturity, ‘Strawberry Ice’ reaches 65 cm in height and 50 cm in spread, making it easy to grow in a pot. The softness of its colour allows it to be adopted in all styles of gardens, whether urban, exotic, or natural. Just find it a sunny spot facing south, sheltered from cold winds.

Agapanthus 'Pitchoune Blue': a compact dwarf ideal for pots
The‘Pitchoune Blue’ agapanthus, like its relative ‘Pitchoune White’, is a small model full of qualities. It offers abundant flowering between June and August, producing large umbels of 12 cm in a blue hue leaning towards lavender, highlighted by darker ultramarine bands.
Its foliage, with broad bands, adds volume and a true exotic touch. Semi-evergreen, it will remain green in regions with milder winters. However, the plant is only moderately hardy, down to a maximum of -8°C. It will therefore need to be wintered in a sheltered spot in most regions, in an unheated space.
Its compact habit (40 cm in height and 50 cm in width) makes it the perfect candidate for pot, window box, or any sufficiently wide container. It will instantly bring a seaside atmosphere to any balcony, terrace, or small garden. Its flowers can even be used in bouquets.
‘Pitchoune Blue’ thrives in full sun, in a substrate rich in organic matter and well-drained. The plant is low-maintenance and can be adopted even by beginner gardeners. In pots, just be particularly mindful of watering during the growth period.

Agapanthus: how to plant themThe 'Flower of Love' agapanthus: a fairly hardy variety
TheAgapanthus ‘Flower of Love’ rewards us with a rich flowering in umbels measuring 10 to 13 cm between July and August. It offers a bright deep blue colour, one of the darkest in the genus.
The deciduous ribbon-like foliage is lush and serves as a backdrop for this magnificent summer flowering, which lasts for nearly 6 weeks.
Its uniqueness lies in its small size, not exceeding 50 cm in all directions, perfectly suited for pot cultivation. But it is also hardier than most varieties, tolerating -12 to -15°C. Even cooler climates can adopt it and allow it to winter outdoors in a protected, sunny location.
The long stems of ‘Flower of Love’ will add a beautiful verticality and a light graphic touch to a flowering pot. Plant several specimens in a wide but shallow container, in a rich substrate that will not retain stagnant water, especially in winter.
To support flowering, do not hesitate to applyfertiliser for containers and pots.

The‘Double Diamond’ agapanthus stands out for its abundant double flowering of delicate pure white. In summer, from July to August, this variety displays large umbels of 10 cm, revealing well-filled trumpet-shaped flowers.
The ribbon-like green foliage is evergreen in mild winters, allowing the plant to maintain an attractive appearance all year round.
The flowers are borne on relatively short stems. ‘Double Diamond’ is indeed a dwarf agapanthus with a compact habit, barely exceeding 30 cm in all directions. It will fit in pots in the tightest spaces, adding its delicate yet modern touch.
Like all agapanthus, it requires a sunny position. Not very hardy (down to -5°C), it will need to be brought indoors to a frost-free location during winter in most regions.
Finally, it will also be wonderful as cut flowers to brighten your interior.
