Description

The Agapanthus Everpanthus® Midnight Sky is a hybrid Agapanthus variety which, beyond the intensity of its superb colour, is characterized by an extra long flowering period, rapid growth, and abundant flowering. It blooms from May onwards with very intense dark blue-violet heads from even darker floral buds. Perennial, like all agapanthuses in the Everpanthus series, it reblooms several times during the summer, providing continuous flowering for 4 to 5 months. It is also highly resistant to heat, drought, and diseases.

Agapanthuses are plants from the Amaryllidaceae family, originating from South Africa. Several species have been extensively hybridised by horticulturists in search of new colours, more compact and hardier plants, better suited to European climates. The cultivar Midnight Sky was selected by De Wet Plant Breeders. This plant develops and multiplies rapidly from a stump with fleshy rhizomes, forming from spring onwards a dense clump of linear, bright green foliage, 50 to 70 cm in diameter at maturity. The abundant and perpetual flowering extends from May to September. Numerous sturdy floral stems 60 to 80 cm tall barely emerge from the foliage clump. At their tips are hemispherical umbels, comprising many small campanulate flowers in the shape of flared trumpets. Each is made up of 6 fused petals at the base. The foliage of this variety is evergreen. In addition to its exceptional floribundity, it has good hardiness, up to about -10/-12°C for a plant in the ground.

The Agapanthus Everpanthus® Midnight Sky forms a true floral, very intense, generous bouquet lasting for long weeks. It stands out in the garden or on the patio. It thrives in full sun, in ordinary but well-drained, not too dry soil in summer. This new variety easily adapts to many temperate regions, especially if its stump is protected by a thick mulch in winter. Whether in a  flowerbed, border, large rockery, pot or container, the Agapanthus is suitable for a variety of uses. It is particularly suitable for mild coastal climates. Pair it with other blue, mauve, or white varieties in a neat setting. It is also very decorative in beds with an exotic touch, with Red Hot Pokers, Daylilies, ornamental grasses, and Cannas.

Planting and care

Plant the stumps of Agapanthus Everpanthus Midnight Sky by covering them with at least 10 cm of good soil, as this will help them better withstand the cold. It is essential to plant them in spring and advisable to mulch them in winter in most regions. Protect your pots in winter. These plants  prefer rich and moist but well-drained soil, enriched with sand. Water them regularly (twice a week) during the growing period. However, avoid watering them afterwards. They dislike excess moisture in winter. This variety is hardy down to around -10/-12°C in a sheltered position, thriving particularly well in borders and containers. This plant seems to prefer shallow but wide containers and will flower abundantly if regularly fed with a slow-release fertiliser.
