Description

The Dieffenbachia 'Amy' also known as Dumb Cane is an ideal houseplant for bringing an exotic and refined atmosphere to your interior. With its large dark green leaves marbled and splashed with creamy yellow to creamy white, this variety stands out for its elegance and brightness. Suitable for contemporary or 'jungle' styles, it will find its place in a bright living room or office. Place it near an east- or west-facing window or behind a sheer curtain to filter the light. This plant must be watered exclusively with non-calcareous water.

The Dieffenbachia 'Amy', a member of the Araceae family, is a herbaceous perennial with an upright habit. At maturity, it can reach a height of 60 to 120 cm with a spread of 50 to 70 cm, offering a striking presence indoors. Its broad and ovate leaves can measure up to 40 cm in length. They feature a smooth, glossy texture that highlights the deep green hues and pale yellow marbling or speckling of the lamina. Its growth is fairly rapid under optimal conditions, though it may slow down in cases of insufficient light or humidity. Flowering indoors is rare and discreet, consisting of spathe and spadix inflorescences far less spectacular than its foliage.

Warning - The nickname 'Dumb Cane' reflects the toxicity of its sap, known to cause irritation if ingested.

Native to the tropical forests of Central and South America, the Dieffenbachia thrives in humid and shaded environments, often beneath the tree canopy. To recreate this habitat indoors, place it in a spot with bright, indirect light or partial shade, with moderate humidity and temperatures between 16 and 24°C. A rich, well-draining substrate is essential to avoid excess water while maintaining consistent moisture.

The Dieffenbachia 'Amy' fits perfectly in any bright room such as a living room, conservatory, or even an office, as long as the right conditions are met. With its graphic foliage, it blends seamlessly into contemporary, Scandinavian, or urban jungle décor styles. To showcase it, opt for a minimalist white ceramic planter or a natural woven basket and place it on a wooden stand or shelf. This plant can also take pride of place in a corner to create a lush focal point. Pair it with a Zamioculcas or an Aspidistra elatior 'Zebra' to create a lush and harmonious ensemble.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface. In winter, reduce the watering frequency. Avoid stagnant water in the saucer. Use non-calcareous water.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot your Dieffenbachia 'Amy' every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring. Use a slightly larger pot with rich, well-draining compost.
Use a houseplant compost enriched with organic matter. Add clay pebbles to the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants with a balanced NPK ratio (e.g., 10-10-10). Use every 2 to 3 weeks during the active growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis. Remove yellowed or dead leaves to maintain a tidy appearance and prevent diseases.
Pruning is generally not necessary. However, if the plant becomes too large or starts to thin out at the base, you can trim the upper stems to encourage denser new growth.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in a solution of water and black soap. Repeat the process every 7 to 10 days until the parasitic pests disappear.
