Description

The Dieffenbachia 'Sterling' or Dumb Cane is a timelessly charming indoor houseplant. Its large, strikingly veined with silvery white leaves perfectly combine elegance and exoticism. Stunning in a bright living room or well-lit office, this plant fits beautifully into a modern, zen, or minimalist décor. Place it near an east- or west-facing window or behind a sheer curtain to filter the light. This plant must be watered exclusively with non-calcareous water.

Belonging to the Araceae family, the Dieffenbachia 'Sterling' is a hybrid cultivar developed by the tropical plant breeding programme at the Mid-Florida Research and Education Centre. This plant has an upright habit with vigorous, non-ramified stems bearing soft, elliptical leaves with prominent white veins, measuring between 20 and 30 cm in length. At maturity, it reaches a height of 60 cm to 1m,depending on growing conditions. The growth rate of the Dieffenbachia 'Sterling' is moderate, making it easy to maintain indoors without frequent pruning. Although flowering is rare in indoor cultivation, it takes the form of spadix inflorescences surrounded by a green spathe characteristic of Araceae. The name 'Dieffenbachia' pays homage to the German botanist Joseph Dieffenbach, head gardener at the Vienna Botanical Garden in the 19th century.

Native to the tropical forests of South America, the Dieffenbachia genus thrives in warm, humid environments. Indoors, the Dieffenbachia 'Sterling' prefers bright, indirect light avoiding direct sunlight which may scorch its leaves. Moderate to high ambient humidity is recommended, along with a stable temperature between 18 and 24°C.

Warning - It is important to note that all parts of the plant are toxic if ingested. It is therefore advisable to keep it out of reach of children and pets and to handle the plant with gloves to avoid contact with the sap.

The Dieffenbachia 'Sterling' finds its place in a living room, office, or even a spacious bedroom, provided that it receives sufficient light—but not direct sunlight through a window. With its upright habit and lush foliage, it complements contemporary, zen, tropical, or minimalist styles. Display this fresh yet sophisticated variety in a stylish white ceramic planter for a clean look or in a wicker pot to enhance its natural appeal. Placed near an armchair or in a room corner, it will draw all eyes. To create a harmonious combination, pair the Dieffenbachia 'Sterling' with a 'Camilla' cultivar, whose cream leaves provide a lovely contrast, or with an Aglaonema, which offers broader, brighter foliage.

Maintenance and care

Water when the substrate is dry on the surface. In winter, reduce the watering frequency. Avoid stagnant water in the saucer. Use non-calcareous water.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot your Dieffenbachia 'Sterling' every 2 to 3 years, preferably in spring. Use a slightly larger pot with rich, well-draining compost.
Use a houseplant compost enriched with organic matter. Add clay pebbles to the bottom of the pot to ensure good drainage.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants with a balanced NPK ratio (e.g., 10-10-10). Use every 2 to 3 weeks during the active growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the leaves regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis. Remove yellowed or dead leaves to maintain a tidy appearance and prevent diseases.
Pruning is generally not necessary. However, if the plant becomes too large or starts to thin out at the base, you can trim the upper stems to encourage denser branching.

Disease and pest advice

In case of a mealybug infestation, clean the leaves with a cloth soaked in a solution of water and black soap. Repeat the process every 7 to 10 days until the parasitic pests disappear.
