More information

Certainly the most commonly encountered Fittonia, and for good reason. Its highly decorative foliage develops an abundant and delicate white veining in relief against a dark green lamina. Although the leaves are small, this highly contrasting colour duo is truly beautiful. With its creeping in habit, this plant will beautifully cover the surface of a terrarium, pot, or hanging basket. It thrives in conditions of high ambient humidity with a moist, but not waterlogged, well-drained substrate. More tolerant regarding light conditions, it flourishes in bright indirect light but can tolerate lower light levels.

Description

The Fittonia verschaffeltii 'Mini White' is the best-known cultivar of this small creeping plant native to the tropical forests of South America, prized for its uniquely coloured foliage. Its highly contrasted foliage develops abundant, fine white veining in relief against a dark green lamina. This very compact 'Mini White' bears smaller leaves than other varieties. It is ideal for terrariums, especially as it thrives in high ambient humidity. You can also grow it in a small pot which it will cover fairly quickly before its stems begin to trail over the sides. It tolerates low-light conditions.

Belonging to the Acanthaceae family like garden Acanthus, the Fittonia 'Mini White' is derived from Fittonia verschaffeltii. Its botanical synonym is Fittonia albivenis 'Mini White'. It is also called Nerve Plant or Mosaic Plant in reference to its ornamental, beautifully veined foliage. The Fittonia albivenis species originates from the lush tropical forests of South America, initially from regions of Colombia and Peru. This evergreen, creeping undershrub thrives under a dense canopy. Indoors, it reaches a maximum height of 15 cm and spreads about 30 to 50 cm. Its small, ovate leaves feature a mix of dark green with prominent white veins. It may occasionally produce small, creamy-white tubular flowers nestled among the bracts. However, many growers prefer to remove the buds as they tend to detract from the decorative appeal of the foliage.

The Fittonia verschaffeltii 'Mini White' is a tropical species grown as a houseplant in our regions. It prefers bright, indirect light and tolerates lower-light conditions slightly away from windows, always without direct sunlight, with ambient humidity above 60% and temperatures between 18 and 24°C. Avoid dropping below 15°C. Use a well-draining substrate and keep it consistently moist but not waterlogged.

The Fittonia verschaffeltii 'Mini White' loves high ambient humidity, making it ideal for terrariums or planted in a pot among other plants with similar requirements. It forms a carpet of highly decorative and visible leaves despite their small size. The creeping nature of this plant also makes it perfect for hanging baskets where its trailing stems can be showcased. Perfect for adding a touch of exoticism and colour, it fits into any space including bathrooms or kitchens. Pair it with plants that have similar needs such as creeping Ficus species like the Ficus pumila which thrive under the same conditions.

Potting advice, substrates and fertilisers

Repot every 1 to 2 years, in spring
Use a well-draining potting mix based on turf, lightened with perlite, which retains moisture while ensuring good aeration for the roots.
Apply a liquid fertiliser for green plants, to be applied diluted every month during the growth period (spring and summer).

Houseplant care

Clean the foliage regularly with a damp cloth to remove dust and allow for better photosynthesis.
No specific pruning is required, but remove any damaged or yellowed leaves to encourage healthy growth.

Disease and pest advice

In case of red spider mite infestation, increase the ambient humidity and clean the leaves with a damp cloth. Shower the foliage, same for aphids. Remove scale insects with a cotton pad soaked in 70% alcohol.
