Contents
Large-flowered magnolias are stunning bushes with evergreen foliage that enhance a garden all year round. Throughout the summer, these varieties of magnolia offer a long flowering period from June to August, even into September! This earns it the nickname of summer magnolia or tulip tree. The large solitary flowers resemble a tulip and can measure between 12 and 25 cm depending on the variety. They are composed of thick, pure white petals, opening around a cone covered in yellow stamens. Each flower lasts only a single day on the tree, but they are continuously renewed. There are several sizes of Magnolia grandiflora, discover our selection to invite one of these magnificent specimens into your garden!
Magnolia grandiflora 'Little Gem'
The Magnolia grandiflora ‘Little Gem’ is the smallest variety of large-flowered magnolias available. With its compact, pyramidal habit, it rarely exceeds a height of 2.5 m, with a spread of 1.5 m to 2.5 m. Its remarkable evergreen foliage is a dark, glossy green on the top, but a surprising matte bronze on the underside. From June to August-September, its magnificent white flowers, tulip-shaped and 15 cm in size, emit a delightful lemony fragrance. Hardy and resistant down to -15 °C, it will thrive in open ground south of the Loire. In colder regions, its flowering will be less abundant. The summer magnolia ‘Little Gem’ is a treasure for a modest-sized garden and can be used in a pot to adorn a terrace. It can also be paired, for example, with a deciduous magnolia that flowers in spring, such as the Magnolia ‘George Henry Kern’.
