Description

The Calibrachoa 'Chameleon Double Pink Yellow' is a brand new variety of fabulous Mini-Petunia, which captivates and surprises with the continuously changing colours of its medium-sized double flowers. It produces trumpet-shaped corollas over a long period of time, which alternately display a variegated livery of yellow, orange-pink, bright pink or almost fuchsia-red depending on temperature and brightness, among other factors. Its dense and semi-trailing dome habit, early and prolonged flowering, as well as its ease of cultivation make this plant a wonderful 'all-in-one' annual that will provide a spectacular display in hanging baskets and containers. To be grown in full sun or partial shade in light, fertile, and not too dry soil.

Calibrachoa, sometimes called Million Bells, are tender perennials often grown as annuals. Very similar to Petunias, they differ in the number of chromosomes that make up their genetic heritage and some morphological characteristics: their flowers are smaller, their growth habit is shrubby or herbaceous with woody stems, their development is less significant and they tolerate drought better. The hybrids that make up this group all belong to the solanaceae family (like tomatoes) and probably descend from an Argentinian species called Petunia integrifolia. The 'Chameleon' series is a first in terms of horticultural selection in Calibrachoas: as its name suggests, the plants offer single or double flowers with changing tones, but also excellent floribundity and a compact, neat appearance.

The 'Chameleon Double Pink Yellow' variety quickly forms a dense mound that is wider than it is tall, measuring 25 to 30 cm (9.8 - 11.8 in) in height and approximately 40 cm (15.7 in) in diameter. Its hairy and branched stems are densely covered with small lanceolate, evergreen, fuzzy, and slightly sticky leaves of a medium green colour. It flowers tirelessly from June to at least September. Numerous funnel-shaped flowers arise from the axils of the leaves; they are 4 to 5 cm (1.6 - 2 in) wide, and formed by a small corolla of crinkled petals arranged in the centre of a larger fusiform corolla. Unlike Petunias, these Calibrachoas do not need to be pruned during the season.

The Calibrachoa 'Chameleon Double Pink Yellow' is ideal for hanging baskets, containers or pots, but its good tolerance to heat and drought also allow it to be used in the ground, where it forms very pretty borders and spots of intense colour in flowerbeds. It can be planted alone or accompanied by 2 or 3 other varieties with pure colours (bright pink, yellow, orange), in tubs, flower pots, planters, on terraces, balconies, or patios. It is also a good conservatory plants. Their combination with Euphorbia 'Diamond Frost', Lobularia 'Snow Princess', Verbenas, Surfinia Petunias, double Bacopa and Nemesia is stunning. The choice is vast and allows free rein to the imagination and tastes of every gardener, even inexperienced ones.

Please note: our young plants in mini-plugs are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transfer and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° (>57.2 F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frosts has definitively passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Calibrachoa Chameleon Double Pink Yellow in the ground or in pots. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Calibrachoas will flower from June to October. Plant your Calibrachoas in a sunny location protected from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich, but above all, well-drained soil. Do not over-water them at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excessive moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for Surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
