More information

This Mini-Petunia forms a pretty dome, very dense and slightly trailing, and it produces an abundance of small double, bicoloured pink flowers with white edges for a very long period. They are so numerous that they almost cover its delicate foliage, which remains impeccable throughout the season. This annual is as generous as it is easy to grow. Very versatile, it is also decorative in sunny borders as well as in hanging baskets or a planters.

Description

The Calibrachoa Superbells Sweet Love combines the natural robustness of Superbells Mini-Petunias with the uniqueness of double and beautifully two-tone flowers. It is a beautiful slightly trailing plant that is covered throughout the summer, and until autumn, with bright pink flowers finely bordered with white. From a distance, this variety stands out for its vibrant colour, and up close for the delicacy of the pattern on each petal. Its long flexible stems are adorned with small green pointed leaves that remain impeccable throughout the season. This generous annual is very easy to grow in the sun, in light, fertile soil that is not too dry.

Calibrachoa, sometimes called Million Bells, are cold-sensitive perennial plants, often grown as annuals. Very similar to Petunias, they differ in the number of chromosomes that make up their genetic heritage and some morphological characteristics: their flowers are smaller and more resistant to rain, their vegetation is shrubby or herbaceous with woody stems, their development is less significant, and they are more drought-resistant. The hybrids that make up this group all belong to the Solanaceae family (like tomatoes) and probably descend from an Argentinian species called Petunia integrifolia.

The 'Superbells Sweet Love' variety quickly forms a dense and wider than tall mound, 25 to 30 cm (10 in to 1 ft) in height and 40 to 60 cm (1 ft 4" to 2 ft) in diameter. Its flexible stems are densely covered along their entire length with lanceolate, persistent, downy and slightly hairy small leaves of medium green colour. The uninterrupted flowering renews itself from June until the first frosts. Many small double flowers are born in the axils of the leaves; they are 3 to 4 cm (1.2-1.6 in) wide. Unlike Petunias, these Calibrachoas do not need to be pruned during the season. Their flowering is called 'self-cleaning', meaning that the faded flowers spontaneously fall off.

The Calibrachoa 'Superbells Sweet Love' is ideal for hanging baskets, planters, or pots, but its heat and drought tolerance as well as its vigor also allow it to be grown in the ground, in very well-drained soil, where it forms very pretty borders and spots of intense colour in flowerbeds or rockeries. It can be planted alone or accompanied by 2 or 3 other complementary varieties (purple, blue, white, pink), in vases, flower pots, planters on terraces, balconies, or patios. Mini-Petunias are also good veranda plants. Their combination with verbenas, surfinia petunias, double bacopas, and nemesis is stunning. The choice is vast and allows for imagination and the tastes of every gardener, even inexperienced ones.

Please note: our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transfer and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° (>57.2 F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frosts has definitively passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Calibrachoa Superbells Sweet Love in the ground or in pots. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Superbells Calibrachoas will flower from June to October. Plant your Calibrachoas in a sunny location protected from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich, but above all, well-drained soil. Do not over-water them at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excessive moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for Surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking good and extend the flowering period.
