More information

This variety of the 'Noa' series bears small petunia flowers of a very beautiful royal blue, lighter on the edges, accentuated by a blue-violet central zone surrounding a small yellow heart. Flowering from spring until the first frosts, it forms pretty dense clumps that overflow charmingly from hanging baskets. A fantastic annual plant that is not very demanding in water, flowers early, and requires low maintenance. Give it sunlight and a fresh, well-drained soil.

Description

The Calibrachoa 'Superbells Unique Blue Violet' is a variety of the improved 'Superbells Unique' series, distinguished by small flowers and a strong resistance to disease and bad weather. With its bushy and slightly spreading habit, this plant bears countless small trumpet-shaped, beautiful royal blue flowers from spring onwards, with the colour strength accentuated by a paler border and a purple central area surrounding a small yellow heart. It forms lovely clumps of slender green and pointed foliage, joyfully overflowing from flowerpots. This wonderful annual plant, which requires little water and is resistant to rain, is essential in borders and hanging baskets. Give it sun and a very fertile, well-drained soil.

Calibrachoa, sometimes called Million Bells, are tender perennial plants often grown as annuals. Very similar to Petunias, they differ in the number of chromosomes that make up their genetic heritage and some morphological characteristics: their flowers are smaller, their growth habit is shrubby or herbaceous with woody stems, their development is less significant, and they tolerate drought better. The hybrids that make up this group all belong to the Solanaceae family (like tomatoes) and probably descend from an Argentinian species called Petunia integrifolia.

The 'Superbells Unique Blue Violet' variety quickly forms a clump that is wider than it is tall, reaching a height of 20 to 25 cm (8-10 in) and a diameter of 30 to 40 cm (1 ft-1 ft 4"). Its long flexible stems are covered along their entire length with small lanceolate, evergreen, downy, and slightly sticky leaves of a light green colour. The flowering period extends from May to the first frosts. Countless small funnel-shaped flowers, born in the axils of the leaves, measuring 3 to 4 cm (1.2-.6 in) wide, display a very pretty blue colour that can be seen from afar. They cover up the faded flowers, which fall offspontaneously.

The Calibrachoa  'Superbells Unique Blue Violet'  is ideal in hanging baskets, flowerpots, or containers, but its heat and drought tolerance, and excellent flower performance in the rain also allow it to be used in the ground, where it forms beautiful borders in sunny flowerbeds. It can be planted alone or accompanied by 2 other varieties with complementary colours (pale yellow, bright pink, orange), in tubs, flowerpots, planters on terraces, balconies, or patios. it is also good plant for the conservatory. Its combination with verbenas, surfinia petunias, and nemesias is stunning. The choice is vast and allows for imagination and the tastes of every gardener, even the inexperienced ones.

Please note: our young plants in mini-pots are professional products intended for experienced gardeners: upon receipt, transfer and store them under cover (veranda, greenhouse, cold frame...) at a temperature above 14C° (>57.2 F) for a few weeks before planting outdoors once the risk of frosts has definitively passed.

Planting and care

You can plant your Calibrachoa 'Superbells Unique Blue Violet' in the ground or in pots. If you wish to plant them in the ground, wait until the last heavy frosts have passed. In the meantime, you can pre-cultivate them in a warm and bright place to accelerate their growth. Calibrachoas will flower from June to October. Plant your Calibrachoas in a sunny location protected from the wind. They need a light and humus-rich, but above all, well-drained soil. Do not over-water them at the beginning of the growing season as they are sensitive to excessive moisture. They tolerate drought well but will need regular watering during hot summer weather. Very floriferous and fast-growing, they are hungry plants. We recommend feeding them with a liquid fertiliser for Surfinias once or twice a week during the growing season. Although not essential, you can remove faded flowers and dry leaves as they appear to keep them looking beautiful and extend the flowering period.
