Thanks to Jenny for preparing the order and Capucine from the shipping department, the clematis I received looks healthy. I have planted it at the base of a Nerium Oleander and am now patiently waiting for it to establish itself.

Description

The Clematis 'Tie Dye' is a recent and very surprising variety with large flowers. Its colours are unusual and very cheerful, blue-violet striped and irregularly splashed with white. The centre is adorned with red anthers. This flowering is unique in the world of clematis. It is a floriferous and vigorous plant, as easy to grow and use as the species 'Jackmanii' of which it is a natural mutation. It climbs anywhere and adapts well to container gardening.

Clematis belong to the ranunculaceae family. They are found in both hemispheres, notably in Europe, the Himalayas, China, Australia, North and Central America. The 'Tie Dye' variety is a semi-woody and climbing perennial plant that will reach a height of 3 to 4m (10 to 13ft), with a minimum spread of 1m (3ft).

This clematis bears large star-shaped flowers, 7 to 10 cm (3 to 4in) in diameter, appearing on the current year's shoots from June to the end of summer, in successive waves. The flowers are solitary or grouped in cymes. They have 4 bluish-purple tepals strangely splashed with white. The centre of the flower is adorned with a white stamen heart with red anthers. The flowering is followed by decorative feathery fruits that persist until winter, with a silver-grey colour. The glabrous leaves are simple, entire, and shiny dark green. This clematis clings to supports or host plants by means of petioles transformed into tendrils.

Plant your clematis alongside your climbing roses to extend the flowering of your walls and pergolas until the end of summer. It is a genus rich in diversity, with colours, shapes, and sizes of all kinds. Take advantage of their ease of cultivation to give your garden a romantic and bohemian atmosphere.

Planting and care

Clematis 'Tie Dye' will appreciate a sunny or lightly shaded position under a tree. Plant it in a fertile, humus-bearing, well-drained soil, shading the roots and base of the stem (with a flat tile, for example). Clematis wilts in overly moist soil. Install it by covering the root ball with 3 cm (1in) of soil, in soil worked to a depth of 20 cm (8in), lightened with good compost and coarse sand. After planting, cut back the clematis stems to about 30 cm (12in) above a nice pair of buds. Water regularly during the first few weeks. However, be careful not to let water stagnate, as this can lead to the development of a collar fungus. Mulch all clematis plants in February with garden compost or well-rotted manure, avoiding direct contact with the stems. Train the stems, without constricting them, until the plant can grip on its own. Clematis also enjoy growing freely on neighbouring plants. After a few years, mound a small amount of soil around the base of your climbing clematis to reduce the risk of wilting, while promoting the growth of vigorous shoots from the stump. Voles and grey worms can attack clematis and devour the stems. Aphids and greenhouse whiteflies are also potential parasites of clematis.
