Initially quite fragile upon arrival, it grew really well last year (2022), reaching almost 2 meters (7 feet) in height! However, it got infested with thrips in the spring (the only plant on the entire terrace! Was it delivered with them...??) which devastated its leaves, and it almost completely withered in the summer! Despite all that, it managed to produce several small flowers that resemble carnivorous plant flowers, all 'skin' with purplish spots. It was quite nice. But considering the damage, I cut it down to ground level at the beginning of autumn, and to my surprise, for the past 3 weeks (April), it has been resurrecting itself, with 3 new stems emerging from the ground and growing rapidly! This time, I have planted a vigorous climbing knotweed above it to provide some shade, and I will probably apply a preventive treatment for thrips, just in case, as it is said that they hibernate in the soil...

Description

Aristolochia durior is a climbing plant with abundant and lush foliage that is its main attraction. It adds a unique exotic touch to the garden. Its heart-shaped leaves, in a dark and glossy green shade, dress the walls or cascade from their supports from May to November.

Its uniquely shaped and modestly sized flowers have earned it the nickname Dutchman's pipe. They are particularly discreet, and get lost in the foliage. The flowers are green veined with yellow and ends with lips of a dark brown, almost black.

This Aristolochia loses its foliage in winter but it is hardy. One plant can cover 8 to 10 m² : it is perfect for greening a wall, or a fence, or adding volume to a sparsely covered climbing plant.

Planting and care

Aristolochia durior can tolerate any well-drained soil, which is not too chalky and rather rich, as long as it is well watered during the driest periods of the year. However, it benefits from the addition of compost and potting soil. It can be planted in indirect sunlight or in partial shade (avoiding the hottest hours of the day). Pruning Aristolochia is only necessary to keep it contained. It requires a trellis (a lattice or cables) as it cannot climb on a smooth support like ivy does. It is slightly toxic if ingested.
